Apple is introducing a new content-checking measure for files and photos shared through public iCloud links with its upcoming iOS 27.3 software update. The move will also extend to iPadOS 27.3, macOS 27.3 and visionOS 27.3.
The tech firm’s newly published support document states that content shared using the ‘Anyone with the Link’ option will be made accessible to the company for checks against harmful material. The policy applies to items stored in iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive.
Apple offers users two ways to share content stored in iCloud: ‘People you choose’ and ‘Anyone with the link’. The first option restricts access to people the user invites or approves, while the second allows anyone with the link, including Apple, to access the shared content.
Starting with version 27.3 or later of Apple’s operating systems, content shared through the public-link option will be checked for harmful material.
Apple has not clearly defined what qualifies as harmful content. However, the category could include malware, malicious files, and child sexual abuse material (CSAM), given the company’s reference to possible law enforcement involvement.
The change specifically concerns publicly accessible links and does not indicate that Apple will scan all files stored privately in iCloud.

Apple has also outlined steps it may take if it finds shared content harmful. According to its support document, the company reserves the right to move, refuse, modify, remove, or delete such content at any time.
It may also take action against the associated Apple Account. This could include blocking or deactivating the account, preventing the user from creating another account using the associated email address or phone number, and involving law enforcement if necessary.
The policy also has privacy implications. Apple says content shared through the ‘Anyone with the Link’ option will no longer be end-to-end encrypted, even if the account owner or participants have enabled Advanced Data Protection.
The first developer betas of iOS 27.3, iPadOS 27.3, macOS 27.3 and visionOS 27.3 are currently available for testing. Apple is expected to release the updates publicly in December. The company has not clarified whether public iCloud links created before the updates will also be checked.
