Apple is approaching its late-April earnings report with investor attention on near-term results and the company’s next product phase. The company will report fiscal second-quarter results on April 30, while John Ternus is set to become Chief Executive on September 1, and Tim Cook will move to executive Chairman.

Apple shares traded near $274 ahead of the report, with the market focused on iPhone demand, services revenue, and updates on artificial intelligence.

Cook also used a recent internal town hall to look back at one of Apple’s most criticized launches and one of its most successful products. He described Apple Maps as his ‘first really big mistake’ and said Apple Watch stands out because of its practical use in daily life and health-related functions. These remarks now add more context to the company’s position ahead of earnings and leadership change.

Apple Prepares to Report Fiscal Second-Quarter Results

Apple’s investor relations page lists Thursday, April 30, 2026, as the date for its fiscal second-quarter earnings release. The report is expected to draw attention to iPhone sales, services growth, and management’s business outlook for the rest of the year. Investors are also watching for more details on how Apple plans to expand AI features across its devices and software.

The leadership transition adds another point of focus before the report. Ternus, who has been with Apple since 2001, will take over as Chief Executive on September 1. He has worked across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and AirPods, and his appointment places a long-time hardware executive at the top of the company as Apple works to strengthen its AI position.

Tim Cook Says Apple Maps “wasn’t ready” for Launch

During the internal town hall, Cook said the 2012 Apple Maps launch was his ‘first really big mistake’ and said ‘the product wasn’t ready.’ He explained that Apple believed the service was prepared because testing had been too local, but broader public use showed major problems.

During launch, Apple Maps drew criticism for wrong directions, mislabeled landmarks, and inconsistent data. Apple later issued a public apology and told users they could try competing navigation apps while improvements were made. The rollout also led to internal fallout, including leadership changes after the backlash. Cook said the episode reinforced the need to learn from mistakes and keep users first when products are brought to market.

Apple Watch Stands Out for Real-World Use

Tim Cook also pointed to the Apple Watch as one of the company’s most important products. He said the watch stands out because it has become useful in daily life and has delivered practical value through health and safety features. He referred to messages from users whose watches helped in emergencies, saying one early note ‘caused me to just stop in my tracks.’

Over time, Apple Watch has expanded from a companion device into a broader health and fitness product. Heart rate tracking, fall detection, emergency alerts, and related features have helped make it part of Apple’s wider health strategy. Cook’s remarks linked the watch to Apple’s effort to build products that fit into everyday routines and offer clear, real-world use.
