The increasing AI competition is making human life easy in many ways. With the help of updated AI tools, one can resolve complicated matters in seconds, but is this overwhelming growth all positive? Apparently, it has no negative influence, but there’s a massive underlying threat lurking all over that most tech enthusiasts are not even aware of.
The recent rise of DeekSeek as a new AI assistant has made the AI race more intense. It’s been a few hours since the DeepSeek AI assistant was launched, and already experts are pointing out the negative impact of this AI race.
Since DeepSeek was launched, the growth of this AI assistant is attractive. When tech enthusiasts have been expecting more advanced AI products from this increasing competition, Yoshua Bengio, who’s more popular as the Godfather of AI, has highlighted a different side of this AI race.
Bengio has spent years in AI research, and according to his analysis, this rapid rise of DeepSeek and its competition with ChatGPT only increases the malicious use of AI technologies.
Now that China has challenged the USA’s dominance in the AI field, Bengio thinks that safety will become the most concerning part of all this because the US companies will try to regain their dominance at the cost of user safety and sometimes ethics.
According to him, “If you imagine a competition between two entities and one thinks that they are way ahead, then they can afford to be more prudent and still know that they will stay ahead. Whereas if you have a competition between two entities and they think that the other is just at the same level, then they need to accelerate. Then maybe they don’t give much attention to safety.”
His report further elaborates on how AI can be used to boost cybersecurity issues and bioweapon development.
The negative side of AI is widespread. Last month, Apollo Research published a report that mentioned that AI models can even be engaged in scheming things to hide their intentions from humans. This can range from disabling a model’s “oversight mechanisms” to mismatching alignment with the user.
About the potential risks, Bengio pointed out, “Right now, science doesn’t know how we can control machines that are even at our level of intelligence, and worse, if they are smarter than us.” So, all users can do it to use AI cautiously to prevent risks, as there’s no way of avoiding this uncertainty.
These alerts are depressing as they boldly highlight the negative sides of using AI. So, the first thing that comes as a solution to all this is to put a stop to AI advancement. Unfortunately, that’s not an easy thing to do, and also, this is not going to solve anything. Instead, the AI advancement should go on, but slowing down the pace will make things a lot better.
