OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Squashes Rumors of Training GPT-5

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman squashes rumors of training GPT-5 and ChatGPT bots are flooding Reddit

According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI is not training a fifth version of its generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) and is instead focusing on improving the capabilities of its newest GPT-4 model.

Sam Altman spoke remotely at a Massachusetts Institute of Technology event and was grilled about artificial intelligence by computer scientist and podcaster Lex Fridman.

Among the questions Altman answered was one about the open letter urging developers to pause developing AI models larger than GPT-4 for six months.

"I believe the letter lacks the most technical detail regarding where we need to pause… An earlier version of the message stated that we are now training GPT-5. We are not and will not be for some time. So it was kind of stupid in that sense. "We're doing things on top of GPT-4 that I believe have all kinds of safety issues that we need to address," he explained.

Altman, on the other hand, stated that there were portions of the letter that he agreed with, such as the need of ensuring AI models are safe and aligned with human values.

ChatGPT Bots are Spamming Reddit

The Reddit forums are being inundated with comments created by ChatGPT and uploaded by bot accounts, leaving moderators struggling to keep up with the mounting volume of spam.

Several subreddits, including r/AskWomen, r/AskEconomics, and r/AskPhilosophy, have been plagued by bots in recent months. According to Vice, Reddit has banned hundreds of bot accounts, but they continue to grow on the site, uploading AI-generated text and flooding automatic systems that flag questionable information.

These spam bots frequently promote sexual content, illegal narcotics, and shady sellers' items. "The bot problem was already extremely bad, and Reddit's automatic anti-spam systems barely help, and by the time they do, it's too late, and the bot's existence has generally served its purpose," r/Technology moderator u/abrownn wrote online.

"Bots on Reddit are overwhelmingly used for simple advertising purposes, not political manipulation, as everyone likes to claim," he continued. "Most of the things advertised by these bot accounts are adult-oriented: marijuana… porn, gambling, or they're sold or operated to mass-advertise drop shipped goods, the majority of which are credit-card skimming scams, deliver different goods than ordered, or never deliver at all."
