Nintendo has officially launched the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, kicking off a new chapter in the gaming world. The first Switch changed how people played by blending handheld and home console gaming. With more than 150 million units sold, it set a high bar. The Switch 2 steps in with major upgrades and a lot of expectations.
The Switch 2 is priced at $450 for the standard model and $500 for a bundle that includes Mario Kart World. It has a sharper and bigger screen, smoothergraphics, and redesigned Joy-Con controllers. In handheld mode, it plays at 1080p with a 120Hz refresh rate. When docked, it supports 4K at 60Hz. The Joy-Cons now feel sturdier, with larger analogue sticks, though they don’t use the long-rumoured hall effect sensors.
The system also adds a feature calledGameChat. This allows players to video call or share screens while playing, turning solo games into more social experiences.

Across the world, fans turned up in huge numbers. In Japan, over 2 million people signed up for a lottery just to get a chance to buy the console. In Australia, midnight lines stretched for blocks even though the price there hit nearly $700.
Nintendo tried to avoid a repeat of past supply issues by delaying the launch and building up stock. Even so, pre-orders sold out fast, and many regions may still face shortages.
The Switch 2 supports most games from the original Switch, bothdigital and physical. This means players don’t have to give up their old favourites. Some titles even run better on the new system, with faster loading times and better frame rates.
At launch, the new system includes Mario Kart World, the first mainline Mario Kart game in more than a decade. Other big-name titles likeCyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition and Street Fighter 6 are also available.
While the upgrades are welcome, the price is a sticking point. The base model is around 50 percent more expensive than the first Switch at launch. And with games now costing around $80, some buyers are unsure whether to jump in right away.
Still, market analysts think the console will do well. Nintendo expects to sell 15 million units by March 2026. The company’s stock has also gone up, showing that investors are betting on another hit.
