With the release of Cyberpunk 2077, developer CD Projekt Red faced a real hard time. Set in the dystopian Cyberpunk universe, this game looked really impressive, but then came the hard blow: the game was disastrously failed at launch. The situation went so bad that Sony completely removed the game from the PlayStation Store.
After this massive strike, the return of CD Projekt Red with the post-launch updates was admirable. Looking at the present status of the game, no one would believe what a disaster it was during its launch. However, despite the revival, the strain is still on CD Projekt Red, and fans are wondering whether the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel will be able to clear it out.
The Cyberpunk franchise is returning for sure, though the time isn’t yet set. After the downfall in 2020, CD Projekt Red focused on updating the game to improve its state. Following the 2.0 update and release of the Phantom Liberty expansion, Cyberpunk 2077 has the best comeback stories in recent times.
However, when everything was great, and fans been enjoying the game, on October 2022, a witter post (presently X) by CD Projekt Red claimed that a sequel to the 2020-released game is in development under the code name, Project Orion. However, since then, there has been no update regarding Project Orion or its release date.
Since the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel has no trailer, it is hard to tell what the story of the game will unfold. In these two years, CD Projekt Red has said nothing about the development of the game or what the story will contain. In that case, following the speculations is the only way to find out something.
According to the speculations, the game will probably be set in the future, just like Cyberpunk 2077. Even this upcoming title may be uniquely American. This prediction came from one of the executive producer Dan Hernberg’s interview statements, where he mentioned, “I think Cyberpunk is obviously a uniquely American story.” Well, all these are the rumors circulating around, as there’s no official news.
There’s another possibility; the developer team referred to it as Project Orion and not a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. In that case, probably, this game will be set in the same universe, but not immediately connected to the last game.
That’s a valid thing, and that may be the case. As of February 2024, the last update said, that the sequel was at a very early stage of development. That’s probably because CD Projekt Red is trying to avoid a buggy and glitchy release like Cyberpunk 2077. Don't conclude because there’s a twist.
Cyberpunk series games generally take a long time. If one follows the announcement time and release time of Cyberpunk 2077, they will see a seven-year gap. While the game was announced in 2013, it was released in 2020, and then also it was in a broken state.
Anyway, whatever information is currently available says this time CD Projekt Red is more careful. The first thing that the developer did with the sequel was to change the game engine. The internal engine of the company, the Red Engine, is now abandoned, and the sequel is developing on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5.
In that case, a stunning visual is sure to come with the game. Hopefully, the open world of the game will be designed more impressively with attention to detail. Additionally, the developers must be careful about the customization aspect that worked like magic in the previous game.
NPCs and some in-game things had no such work besides making the world alive. This is actually a required thing to make the in-game world realistic. Expectedly, these will be the same in the sequel. Initially, these things weren’t working right in Cyberpunk 2077, but later updates made them work. Hopefully, things won’t be the same in the sequel of the game, and every feature will work from the beginning.
Also, there are a few things that didn’t work for Cyberpunk 2077. Among them, the Lifepaths and the gigs are on top. These two were completely meaningless features added to the game. Expectedly, in the sequel CD Projekt Red will fix these and bring a refined version of gameplay for gamers.
Of course, after the disastrous release of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red will be ambitious about the sequel and get back what it lost after that release. So, maybe the successor will be more worthy. The developer team is currently in the process of doing its best to bring a game to perform great at launch. Anyway, unless it comes, nothing can be confirmed.
