Kar Saathi gives taxpayers simple AI-based guidance on ITR forms, tax rules and return procedures.
India’s tax system now has fewer sections, rules and forms under the Income Tax Act, 2025.
The AI tool can handle common questions, while complex tax matters may still need expert advice.
Income tax filing in India has entered a new digital phase with Kar Saathi, an AI-powered tax assistant from the Income Tax Department. The department launched Kar Saathi as part of its wider plan to make tax services easier to understand and access.
The government announced Kar Saathi on March 20, 2026, under the PRARAMBH 2026 tax awareness programme. The new Income Tax Act, 2025 also came into force on April 1, 2026. Kar Saathi now forms part of the department’s upgraded digital tax system and offers round-the-clock help with common tax questions.
The basic idea remains simple. Instead of searching through long tax documents, forms and instructions, a taxpayer can ask a tax-related question in normal language. Kar Saathi then provides guidance on the relevant tax process.
The timing of this AI tool holds special importance. India has moved to a new income tax law after decades under the earlier framework. The new law aims to make the tax system shorter and easier to follow.
The government has highlighted a major reduction in the size of the law. The number of sections has fallen from 819 to 536. The number of rules has dropped from 511 to 333. The number of forms has also declined from 399 to 190.
These changes can make tax rules easier to understand, but taxpayers still face questions about which form to choose, which provisions apply and how to complete a return. Kar Saathi adds a conversational layer to this new system.
The scale of India’s tax system shows why such a tool can matter.
For Assessment Year 2024-25, the Income Tax Department recorded 7.28 crore ITRs by July 31, 2024. The figure stood at 6.77 crore in the previous year, which marked 7.5% growth.
The same period saw 58.57 lakh first-time ITR filers. On July 31 alone, taxpayers filed 69.92 lakh returns. At the peak, the portal handled 5.07 lakh ITRs in one hour and 917 ITRs in one second. More than 3.2 crore successful logins took place on July 31.
The department also recorded 6.21 crore e-verified ITRs. Aadhaar OTP accounted for 5.81 crore of those verifications. The e-filing helpdesk handled about 10.64 lakh taxpayer queries during that filing period.
These figures show the huge volume that the tax system handles every year. An AI assistant can take care of many basic questions and help taxpayers find the right information faster.

Kar Saathi can guide taxpayers through several common tax tasks. These include questions about ITR forms, tax rules, deductions, refunds, notices, e-verification and other e-filing procedures.
For example, a taxpayer with salary income, mutual fund capital gains and shares in an unlisted company may need help with ITR form selection. The answer depends on the nature of income and other details. ITR-2, for example, covers individuals and Hindu Undivided Families who do not have business or professional income but have certain situations such as capital gains, more than one house property or unlisted equity shares.
A conversational assistant can explain the relevant conditions in simpler language and direct the taxpayer towards the appropriate form. This can reduce the need for repeated searches across tax documents.
The new system has moved beyond an early launch stage. The Income Tax Department’s portal now offers ITR-1 to ITR-5 for Assessment Year 2026-27 through online and offline utilities. ITR-6 and ITR-7 currently have Excel utilities available.
The latest portal information also shows active tax services for the current assessment year. This gives Kar Saathi a live tax environment in which it can guide taxpayers through current procedures and forms.
The 2026 tax cycle has also produced a fresh measure of the system’s scale. More than 5.9 crore ITRs had reached the Income Tax Department by July 31, 2026. The department’s official social media account also confirmed that figure.
The new tax regime has also changed several important tax calculations. For Assessment Year 2026-27, the new-regime slabs start with nil tax up to ₹4 lakh. Income from ₹4 lakh to ₹8 lakh attracts 5%, ₹8 lakh to ₹12 lakh attracts 10%, ₹12 lakh to ₹16 lakh attracts 15%, ₹16 lakh to ₹20 lakh attracts 20%, ₹20 lakh to ₹24 lakh attracts 25%, and income above ₹24 lakh attracts 30%.
The Section 87A rebate also rose to ₹60,000 for eligible taxpayers with total income up to ₹12 lakh under the new regime.
Such changes can create basic questions about tax liability, rebates and return details. Kar Saathi can help explain these provisions in a more direct format.
Kar Saathi can simplify common tax questions, but complex cases still need professional judgement. Issues related to complicated capital gains, foreign income, foreign assets, business income, disputes or tax litigation may require a chartered accountant or tax lawyer.
The government also continues to support taxpayers through physical assistance centres. This shows that the new model does not depend only on AI. Digital assistance and human support can work together.
Why This Matters?
Kar Saathi matters as India’s tax system grows digital and millions of taxpayers file returns each year. An AI assistant can make complex tax rules easier to understand, reduce confusion about forms and procedures, and give access to official guidance. Its role could make the tax return process less stressful.
Kar Saathi marks a wider shift in India’s tax system. The government has reduced the size of the new tax law, redesigned its digital portal and added an AI assistant that works around the clock.
The strongest numbers explain the need for this change. India handles more than 7 crore ITRs in a major filing cycle, while the latest 2026 season has already crossed 5.9 crore returns by July 31. With millions of taxpayers and a large number of first-time filers, simple access to tax information can make a real difference.
Kar Saathi therefore represents more than a chatbot. It places an AI help layer at the front of India’s digital tax system and aims to turn difficult tax instructions into simpler answers. The real test will come from how accurately and consistently it handles the huge range of questions that arise during every ITR season.
