Google Pay introduced a new artificial intelligence-powered feature in India that aims to make personal finance management more intuitive. Called 'Ask Google Pay', the Gemini-backed conversational assistant allows users to interact with the app using natural language to better understand their spending habits, discover savings opportunities, and learn about financial concepts. The rollout marks Google's latest effort to integrate generative AI into consumer financial services while reinforcing privacy safeguards around sensitive payment data.
The latest addition to the app makes it possible for the users to pose queries regarding their expenditures using text or voice instead of manually going through their transaction history. Using the capabilities of Google’s Gemini AI model, “Ask Google Pay” will be able to analyze the expenditure pattern, clarify finance jargon, advise on how to save money, and even guide users on comparing their credit card options based on their expenditure pattern.
According to Google, the assistant is capable of handling 10 Indian language conversations, thus making this particular feature available to more users in the country. Apart from monitoring expenditures, the users can also pose questions about SIP investments, and CIBIL score.
Unlike other AI-based platforms which are turned on automatically, Ask Google Pay is an optional feature. The feature has to be turned on by the users through the activation of "Personalisation within Google Pay." This makes it possible for the users to decide whether to have the transaction history used to create personal recommendations.
The company has also noted that the financial data used by the assistant will always remain within the Google Pay ecosystem and cannot be passed to third-party apps. Information from the users does not train any Google AI models according to Google. The assistant also generates incorrect responses at times and cannot replace financial advisors.

This launch comes in line with Google’s plans for integrating Gemini throughout its consumer products. Google Pay is slowly transforming from a simple payments application to become a financial companion capable of not only facilitating payments but also providing budgeting help, education, and personalized recommendations.
According to Google, the feature should be viewed as an educational tool rather than an automatic financial advisor. The thing is, Ask Google Pay will be able to analyze transactions and offer helpful insights but not make payments for its users. The new feature is being launched in India for some Google Pay users right now.
India is still one of Google's major digital payment markets, so the development of AI-powered financial help indicates the growing convergence of fintech and generative AI. In order to stand out amidst digital payment services competing to offer more, intelligent budgeting, analysis of spending, and personalized financial advice have become essential.
