Jenna Ortega doubles as lead and producer in a horror-heavy storyline
New characters, including Lady Gaga and Steve Buscemi, shake up Nevermore
The Addams family gets more screen time and darker arcs
Netflix’s witchy hit Wednesday is preparing to come back darker and braver than ever. With the success of the first season, everyone’s looking to Nevermore Academy as Season 2 holds the promise of new characters, darker horror undertones, and a plot that delves further into the dark psyche of Wednesday Addams. This season, she’s not only solving crimes, she’s dictating the show itself.
Netflix just confirmed that Wednesday Season 2 will come out in two halves. Part 1 hits the screens on August 6, 2025, and Part 2 hits on September 3, 2025. Both parts will contain four episodes.
The shift to a split release seems to be a deliberate decision to keep viewers engaged for a longer duration. Since suspense and fan theory-construction are at the heart of the show’s pull, this format allows viewers to remain engaged in the creepy world of Nevermore for a bit longer.
Production for Season 2 moved from Romania to Ireland, presenting a new visual landscape. Filming wrapped in December 2024, with Ireland’s misty forests, moss-covered ruins, and medieval buildings providing a darker tone for the show.
The location change also helps the show’s aesthetic shift. Nevermore is a colder, older, and more haunted world, things that fit with Season 2’s increase in horror and legacy.
Jenna Ortega is back not just as the deadpan and resolute Wednesday Addams, but also as an executive producer, providing her considerable creative input this time around.
Ortega has been candid about taking the show away from teen romance and towards a slasher-horror storyline. ‘It’s going to be more horror-oriented,’ she assured in a behind-the-scenes teaser. Showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar also indicated that each episode will be handled as an individual horror movie, with genre-specific storytelling and aesthetic notes.

Whereas the first season was centered on school drama and self-discovery, the second season expands outward to delve into family, destiny, and power.
Issues of family legacy, mastery over one’s supernatural powers, and the secrets that reside in Nevermore’s past become the focus. A malevolent villain, reported to be a doll-fixated serial killer, is introduced and puts Wednesday’s powers and mental limits to the test.
Traditional horror fiction will also be the source of inspiration, with an episode being a direct homage to Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death.

The Addams clan will have a larger presence this season, presenting fans with a more intimate look at their spooky connections and inherited powers.
Steve Buscemi is Barry Dort, Nevermore’s enigmatic new director.
Billie Piper guest stars as Capri, a music instructor whose inner demons are potentially resonant with Wednesday’s.
Thandiwe Newton takes on the role of Dr. Fairburn, a therapist who could be concealing more than her techniques.
Joanna Lumley provides a touch of vintage charm as Grandmama, keeping in line with the Addams family tradition.
Christopher Lloyd, famous for playing Uncle Fester in the 1990s films, has made a nostalgic guest appearance.
Lady Gaga makes an addition to the cast as Rosaline Rotwood, the mysterious teacher of Nevermore, whose motives are still shrouded in doubt.
Her introduction is set to take center stage in the second half of the series, with showrunners hinting at her as a game-changer. Ortega described the experience of working with Gaga as ‘a surreal and electric experience,’ praising her attention to detail and flair as ‘totally in sync with the show’s vibe.’
Karloff – A sports-inclined new student with prosthetics and an enigmatic
Background
Wolfgang – A confident teenager whose origins could tie in with the Addams family
Annie – A child prodigy, perhaps the moral guide of the show, or an unexpected menace
These students will probably shake things up at Nevermore and create new friendships, or antagonisms, with Wednesday.
Tim Burton is back in a creative role, making sure the series maintains its visual uniqueness and thematic depth. The visual grammar this time goes even more in slasher directions, dramatic lighting, creepy set design, and gruesome symbols are everywhere.
Coupled with Ortega’s deadpan performance, the season tries to make Wednesday go into bolder territory, retain the snarky wit, but sharpen the darks.
Wednesday Season 2 isn’t just a continuation, it’s a reinvention. With a fresh location, a more confident cast, and a refined horror vision, the show is poised to evolve from cult favourite to horror landmark. As August approaches, one thing is certain: Nevermore Academy has never felt more alive, or more haunted.
