Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout will play Harry, Hermione, and Ron after a 30,000-strong open casting.
John Lithgow, Paapa Essiedu, and Nick Frost lead a star-studded supporting cast in HBO’s Harry Potter reboot.
The series begins filming in summer 2025 and will closely follow J.K. Rowling’s original seven novels.
HBO is preparing a highly anticipated television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter’. This new version promises a faithful retelling of the beloved novels. It aims to bring more depth to the characters and the magical world through a long-form series format.
Let’s first reveal the faces behind the three main characters, and no, it's not Daniel Radcliffe!
Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter. Arabella Stanton is set to portray Hermione Granger. Alastair Stout takes on the role of Ron Weasley. After a massive global casting call that drew over 30,000 hopefuls, HBO has named the lead actors.
All three are relative newcomers. McLaughlin previously acted in ‘Grow,’ an upcoming comedy on Sky alongside Nick Frost and Golda Rosheuvel. Stanton played Matilda in ‘Matilda: The Musical’ in London’s West End from 2023 to 2024. Stout, meanwhile, will make his professional acting debut with this series.
The young leads are backed by a strong ensemble. John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore. Janet McTeer joins as Professor McGonagall. Paapa Essiedu will portray Severus Snape, while Nick Frost steps into the role of Rubeus Hagrid. Luke Thallon is cast as Professor Quirrell. Paul Whitehouse, who appeared in the original films as Sir Cadogan, now returns as Argus Filch.
The casting of Lord Voldemort has not been announced yet. However, some fans speculate that actors like Cillian Murphy could be considered for the role. Tom Felton, who originally played Draco Malfoy, may also appear in a behind-the-scenes role or brief cameo.

The series is written and executive-produced by Francesca Gardiner, who also serves as the showrunner. Mark Mylod will direct multiple episodes and serve as an executive producer. J.K. Rowling will also serve as an executive producer. Other producers include Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman, who produced the original film series.
Production is scheduled to begin in summer 2025. While a 2026 release is anticipated, the timeline may extend into 2027 depending on the production process. The show is a collaboration between HBO, Warner Bros. Television, and Brontë Film and TV.
The HBO series will retell all seven of Rowling’s novels. It promises a more detailed and book-accurate adaptation than the previous movies. The show will explore subplots, deepen character arcs, and expand the magical world through the freedom of television storytelling.
This approach aims to introduce something new to longtime fans while also appealing to a younger generation. Each season will likely cover one book, allowing ample time to explore the plot in full.
J.K. Rowling’s involvement has sparked some public debate due to her views on the transgender community. HBO’s Chief Content Officer, Casey Bloys, addressed the issue in a recent podcast. He emphasized that Rowling’s personal opinions would not affect the content of the show.
“We already have a show on HBO from her called ‘C.B. Strike’ that we do with the BBC. It’s pretty clear that those are her personal, political views. She’s entitled to them. ‘Harry Potter’ is not secretly being infused with anything,” Bloys said on a podcast.
