First-Ever NFT-Themed Restaurant Shuts the Door for Crypto Payment

The crypto downfall is affecting its popularity in the NFT-themed restaurant.

The Los Angeles Times reported on Friday that recently opened nonfungible token- (NFT)-themed burger joint Bored & Hungry no longer accepts cryptocurrency as a form of payment for its food. When questioned, one Bored & Hungry employee told the Los Angeles Times "Not today — I don't know." The individual didn't give any indication of when the decision was made to cut crypto from the menu of payment options, nor did they know if crypto payments would be making a return.

Bored & Hungry initially launched back in April month of this year. At the time, one worker told the Los Angeles Times that the majority of its customers didn't seem to care about crypto payment options, also noting that customers were generally indifferent to "the restaurant's fidelity to the crypto cause." Another Bored & Hungry restaurant patron told the Los Angeles Times "People want to hold onto their Ethereum. They're not gonna want to use it." Customer Richard Rubalcaba said, "I don't know how crypto purchases would work, with the crash." Opening during the heights of Web3 optimism, the restaurant once showed the price of food items in U.S. dollars as well as select cryptocurrencies on the menu. However, just two months after becoming the first restaurant to accept ETH and ApeCoin, it's been reported that the recent volatility of the crypto markets has temporarily forced the restaurant to stop accepting crypto.

Originally, the restaurant embraced all the aesthetics of the crypto-age, including walls adorned with memes and tableware bearing Bored Ape NFT art. That also meant embracing the notion of paying for physical items with the newly popular digital currency. The menu showcased the restaurant's food items alongside its price in both U.S dollars and cryptocurrency. Fast-forward a few months and you will no longer find references to cryptocurrency on the joint's menu. In fact, all the prices given for items are shown in US dollars only. While the Times could not get hold of owner Andy Nguyen for comment on this sudden change, an anonymous employee did share that they didn't know when or if the store would begin accepting crypto again. It is just simply not an offered choice for now.

Many of the restaurant's patrons stated that they are not hardcore crypto enthusiasts, and simply frequent the establishment for the food. Customer Jessica Perez said, "We rate this up there with In-N-Out, maybe even better."
