Alex Housley is the founder and CEO of Seldon, a leading open-source MLOps platform. Since 2003, he has built technology companies specializing in mobile, data, and machine learning. At Seldon, he deployed over 10 million models globally, raised more than $30 million in funding, and helped shape the MLOps industry. Currently serving as CPTO, he drives product innovation while championing ethical AI practices worldwide.

Early Life and Education

Alex attended Stowe School where he received the Richard Branson Award for Enterprise and captained the rugby and athletics teams. He attended St George's, University of London, and studied for a BSc in Business Computer Systems, graduating with a 2:1 honours degree. While on his work placement, he started his first start-up, combining his academic learning with the experience of starting a business, which has paved the way for a career in technology and AI.

Professional Career

Alex began as a web and Python developer at Draftfcb and pH Group, before moving into business development at Multimap. In 2003, he founded Total Hotspots, which Rummble later acquired. From 2011 to 2014, he served as COO at Rummble Labs, leading the SaaS recommendation pivot. In 2014, he founded Seldon, serving as CEO and later CTO, while also advising on UK AI policy through OpenUK and the APPG AI.

Business Intervention in AI

Seldon accelerates enterprise AI with scalable, cost-efficient tools for ethical deployment, Generative AI, real-time monitoring, and smarter, simplified model operations.

Funding for AI: Seldon has raised $20 million in Series B funding to improve the deployment and monitoring of AI models. This venture aims to make automation and bias reduction easier, ensuring ethical, scalable, and efficient AI use in the real world.

Generative AI: Seldon’s LLM Module simplifies Generative AI deployment and management, leading to improved scalability and efficiencies (e.g., availability, speed, etc). Built with vLLM, DeepSpeed, and Hugging Face, it enables organizations to innovate and make AI-powered decisions in real-world applications across diverse contexts.

Making LLMs Easier: Seldon enables companies to simplify real-time deployment of machine learning models (e.g., LLMs) by transforming complexity into a competitive advantage. Seldon provides a recommended balance of flexibility, observability, and cost efficiency to integrate various machine learning frameworks and build scalable deployment workflows to make responsive, bespoke AI applications across environments.

Leveraging GenAI: Seldon enables organizations to supercharge customer service deployments with Generative AI (GenAI), creating faster LLM deployment, smarter operations, and richer customer experiences. With Seldon's scalable, manageable, and efficient platform for visible, secure innovation, organizations cut costs and convert complex data into real-time, customer-ready insights for their organizations and industries.

Optimizing Cost: Seldon Core 2 empowers enterprises to scale AI smarter, optimizing inference, modular deployments, and autoscaling with cost controls. Its platform delivers real-time monitoring, resource efficiency, and budget governance, enabling production AI that’s fast, reliable, and economically sustainable.

Smart Autoscaling: Seldon’s Core version 2.9 and MLServer version 1.7 took AI deployment even further with smarter autoscaling, partial scheduling, and token-by-token streaming. It also dramatically improved Python support and offered numerous configurability and usability enhancements, making it easier for organizations to scale their models at lower cost and to develop flexible AI applications in real time.

Business Achievements

During his leadership, Seldon was established as a leading open-source MLOps platform capable of deploying large numbers of ML models worldwide. There was significant investment while he led the organization, the discovery of helpful tools for ethical AI governance, the design of global MLOps standards, the adoption of an organization-wide MLOps framework across industries, and the development of an AI policy that will endure.

Controversies

There are no publicly known controversies regarding Alex Housley. He is recognized solely for his leadership in AI and MLOps, in ethical AI governance, and in simplifying ML deployment, based on publicly available information and without incident or dispute.
