TensiStrength: Can AI measure our Stress Levels?

TensiStrength Reveals Bill Gates, Bernie Sanders as most stressed out Leaders

We live in a world that is populated with people from all walks of life, from business elitists to a common man, a high school teacher to a fireman. However, we often fail to acknowledge that while we don't share the same lifestyle, each of us is still a human. And that implies like us; others too are subject to emotions like anger, frustration, happiness, and so on. But now we have Artificial Intelligence that can help us blur these stereotypical lines and thinking. Mike Thelwall, professor of IT at Wolverhampton University, has developed a tool called TensiStrength, that can estimate the strength of stress and relaxation expressed by a person in short texts, even for informal language. Though it was originally developed for English and optimized for general short social web texts, such as tweets, but can be configured for other languages and contexts by changing its input files. The scale used to measure stress levels is approximately as follows: -1 (no stress), -2 (low stress), -3 (moderate stress), -4 (high stress), -5 (extreme stress). TensiStrength can also report binary (positive/negative), trinary (positive/negative/neutral) results.

The Stressed Business Leaders

Recently this tool made a huge sensation when it claimed that Bill Gates is the most stressed billionaire. The talent innovation company SHL teamed by with Mike to rank prominent business leaders by how "stressed" their recent tweets have been. They used TensiStrength to analyze the tweets on a scale of -1 to -5, based on the classification of words related to stress, frustration, anxiety, anger, and negativity. Then, it ranked the business leaders (chosen because of how often they appear in the news and on social media) based on the proportion of tweets they posted between January 1 and June 30 that classify as "low stressed" or higher (-2 to -5 on the TensiStrength scale).  As per the study findings, Bill Gates topped the list with 20 percent of his tweets categorized as low stressed or higher. Bill Gates was followed by Oprah Winfrey, model Ashley Alexiss, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and Apple CEO Tim Cook, who had stress tweeted at 19.8, 18.4, 17.8, and 16.9 percent, respectively.

The Politicians Under Pressure

When the TensiStrength was used on tweets of senators, presidential candidates of the USA, it was found that Democrat senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Ed Markey are the most stressed politicians in America. And surprisingly, President Donald Trump was noticed as one of the least stressed politicians in America. Mike Thelwall explains, "TensiStrength's terms are not only synonyms for stress, anxiety, and frustration but also terms related to anger and negative emotions because stress can be a response to negative events and can cause negative emotions."

Stressed up Places

This test analysis was also carried to find out the most stressed places in the US and UK due to the COVID-19 pandemic scare. The study was conducted by UK-based health service provider Babylon Health which analyzed nearly 2.5 million tweets up to May 20. Researchers sought out words like "self-isolation," "corona," "pandemic," "vaccine," "PPE," and "social distancing." in real-time using the Tweepy API between May 14th-18th. It was observed that in US states, Wyoming registered the highest stress with 40.1percent, followed by Delaware and Mississippi at 38.8percent and 38.7percent. Meanwhile, South Dakota had the least stress tweets at 9.4percent. As per city basis, Stockton in California is the most stressed city (43.7percent) in the US, in contrast to East Honolulu, Hawaii, and East Providence, Rhode Island, which ranked as the least stressed cities at 16.5percent each. In the UK where "stressed" was used as a focus word, Hillingdon topped the list as a most stressed borough in London, with 44.3 percent.

Others

Earlier, Buzz Bingo tried these tests to find which TV soap caused most stress, and the results revealed it was Emmerdale with 40.4 percent, followed by EastEnders at 39.1 percent. Last year, Casumo attempted a TensiStrength test on football players participating in the Premier League. And Pedro Obiang of West Ham was named as the most stressful player for fans to watch during the Premier League's local rivalries.
