Meta has introduced a new Instagram Map feature designed to help users stay connected by sharing their ‘last active location’ with friends. This service operates similarly to Snapchat's Snap Map, enabling users to see the place from which their friends' posts originate.

Meta has stated that the sharing feature is turned off by default and that the user must opt in. However, many users have claimed that the feature was activated on their devices without warning, unintentionally exposing their location. This issue was voiced by many social media users, arguing that location visibility could jeopardize people who could potentially be stalked.

According to one user, "Instagram randomly updating their app to include a maps feature without alerting people is incredibly dangerous." The backlash led to a fast response from Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram.

The App’s Leadership Addresses User Confusion and Safety Measures

Adam clarified the situation on Threads. He went ahead to explain: “The confusion is mainly because users see themselves on the map when they open the app and tend to think others can also see their locations.” Mosseri assures that location sharing on the app takes consent based on two-step verification, meaning one needs to give the nod twice before the feature gets turned on.

A Meta spokesperson also told CNBC, “Instagram Map is off by default, and your live location is never shared unless you choose to turn it on.” Furthermore, only mutually connected followers or members of a private custom list can view the location when location sharing is enabled. These safeguards are meant to prioritize user privacy and control over GPS data.

What the Map Feature Means for User Privacy and Connectivity

The map feature is designed to increase real-time social engagement by letting users discover where their friends are doing something. Unlike before, this feature now has clearer opt-in options and only shares your position with trusted contacts.

However, the recent Instagram Map safety concerns question the balance between privacy interests and innovation. The Instagram location sharing rollout showcases the importance of transparent communication in product launches, especially when involving sensitive data.

Instagram is addressing the issue with the feature to respond to user criticism. For users to safely enjoy the new social linking Instagram aims to offer, they must understand how the map works and can choose to share location information through the settings.

The Instagram Map offers an exciting connection channel, but it must be supported by clear user education and sufficient privacy safeguards that consider individual safety needs.
