The XRP Ledger (XRPL) could eventually let customers create wallets without holding XRP, removing a longstanding obstacle for stablecoin payments. An October 2026 developer proposal would shift account reserves to sponsoring businesses rather than eliminate the network’s safeguards.
Currently, every activated XRPL account needs a base reserve of 1 XRP. Additional ledger objects, including trust lines, generally require another 0.2 XRP each. These requirements discourage spam and prevent unlimited account creation.
For a payment company onboarding 100,000 customers, the base requirement alone represents 100,000 XRP. Even users intending to hold only dollar-denominated stablecoins must currently arrange XRP funding before activating accounts.
A proposed transaction, SponsoredAccountCreate, submitted on October 15, would let an existing account create another wallet while covering its reserve. The new account could show zero XRP, but the sponsor would retain sufficient XRP to satisfy the ledger's reserve rules.
The broader XLS-68 Sponsored Fees and Reserves proposal also allows businesses to pay transaction fees through signatures or prefunded sponsorship budgets. Importantly, customers would retain control of their private keys, rather than surrendering ownership to the sponsor.
This could make onboarding resemble familiar payment applications: users receive stablecoins without first buying a separate cryptocurrency for network costs.
The model could benefit businesses distributing Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin, embedded-wallet providers and software agents making automated payments. Ripple's integration with Privy, owned by Stripe, highlights interest in simplifying wallet creation for payment applications.
Sponsorship does not make transactions free. Instead, businesses absorb network expenses and must manage budgets, account growth and potential abuse. At today's reserve level, sponsoring one million basic accounts would require backing of one million XRP.
As of October 19, the underlying sponsorship amendment had 11 supporting validator votes, below the 29 required for activation. The account-creation code also remained under review.
Security concerns are material. During development, researchers discovered a reserve-accounting flaw that could leave ledger objects without backing when sponsorship ended. XRPL developers reported that a fix shipped in version 3.4.0 in September, before mainnet activation.
Under the revised approach, sponsors cannot simply withdraw backing unless users fund their own reserves, another sponsor takes over, or the account is deleted. Developers will also need interfaces showing who pays fees, what happens when sponsorship budgets expire, and whether customers can migrate accounts between sponsoring providers safely.
Zero-balance XRPL wallets could simplify stablecoin adoption without removing XRP's underlying role. Their success depends on validator approval, secure sponsorship accounting and whether businesses can sustainably cover users' costs at scale.

1. What are zero-balance wallets on the XRP Ledger?
Zero-balance wallets are proposed XRPL accounts that would allow users to hold and transact digital assets without maintaining XRP reserves themselves. Instead, a sponsoring business or existing account would provide the XRP required to satisfy the network's reserve rules.
2. How much XRP is currently required to create an XRPL wallet?
An activated XRP Ledger account currently requires a base reserve of 1 XRP, while additional ledger objects generally require another 0.2 XRP each. These reserves help prevent network spam and discourage excessive account creation.
3. How would sponsored accounts work on the XRP Ledger?
The proposed SponsoredAccountCreate transaction would allow an existing XRPL account to create another wallet while covering its reserve requirements. The new wallet could maintain a zero XRP balance while its owner retains control of the associated private keys.
4. How could zero-balance wallets benefit RLUSD and stablecoin payments?
Zero-balance wallets could allow users to receive and transfer stablecoins such as Ripple's RLUSD without first purchasing XRP for account activation. Businesses could sponsor account reserves and transaction fees, simplifying onboarding for payment applications and automated financial services.
5. When will XRP Ledger zero-balance wallets become available?
The sponsorship proposal remains subject to technical development, security reviews and validator approval before activation on the XRP Ledger mainnet. As of October 19, 2026, the underlying amendment had received 11 supporting validator votes, below the 29 required for activation.
