Compatible Galaxy users can approve eligible UPI payments with a fingerprint instead of entering a PIN, up to Rs. 10,000.
Samsung’s biometric UPI experience builds on NPCI’s on-device biometric authentication framework.
UPI onboarding and payment authentication are becoming more closely integrated into the Galaxy device experience.
Samsung Wallet now lets compatible Galaxy users in India approve eligible UPI payments of up to Rs 10,000 with a fingerprint instead of a UPI PIN. The option comes from NPCI's UPI framework. Samsung's contribution is fitting it into the Galaxy setup and security experience. Here is what changed and what to check.
NPCI announced on-device biometric authentication in a circular dated October 7, 2025, and the new methods are optional, so users can keep their existing ones. Under it, a phone's fingerprint or face recognition can approve a UPI payment. Launch reports said the initial cap was Rs. 5,000, to be reviewed later.
The review led to a higher ceiling. NPCI reportedly issued circular OC-226A on July 3, 2026, raising the biometric approval limit from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000 per transaction. It took effect on August 7, 2026. This is not the general UPI limit. Biometrics are not compulsory, and existing checks still apply.
Samsung is not alone. The BHIM app launched biometric approval in March 2026. Paytm has also introduced biometric authentication for UPI. Samsung's announcement came weeks after the new ceiling took effect, so it is adopting a change, not driving one.
Samsung says the fingerprint check happens on the device, and that the goal is quicker routine payments with less need to expose a PIN in public. Sammy Fans reports the option had been available for some time before Samsung officially announced it.
Samsung's potential advantage is integration, not the biometric check, which other apps offer. Samsung says it is the first phone maker to let users set up UPI through Wallet during new-device setup, so people can be payment-ready from the start. That is Samsung's own claim, which I could not verify independently. The result is a shorter path from a new phone to a first payment.
Samsung also says Wallet uses its Knox security platform, fingerprint recognition, and encryption to protect sensitive data. Since Samsung controls setup and hardware, it can join these steps more closely than an app that runs across many phone brands. This is an interpretation, not Samsung's statement.
Under NPCI's framework, the biometric match happens on your device. Your device, UPI app, and bank must all support the feature. If the sensor fails, for example, with wet or worn fingers, you can still use your PIN. That fallback matters, since no fingerprint reader works perfectly every time.
Samsung's October 2025 announcement also said users would be able to use face recognition for Wallet access and UPI payments. Recent rollout reports focus mainly on fingerprints. Check which biometric options your Galaxy phone offers. If face recognition does appear, the same checks apply: Confirm the limit and keep your PIN ready.
Some announcements are separate from UPI. In October 2025, Samsung said Wallet would support:
Online payments with saved credit and debit cards at key merchants
Forex cards for Tap & Pay, powered by WSFx Global Pay Limited
AU Bank cards for Tap & Pay
Samsung said these would roll out soon. I could not confirm they are all live in India today, so treat them as announced. The wallet also stores boarding passes, tickets, ID cards, digital keys, and loyalty cards.

Saved fingerprints: Any fingerprint saved on your phone may approve a payment. Remove any that are not yours, especially on a shared phone.
The ceiling: Rs. 10,000 is the limit for biometric approval, not a UPI cap. A payment above it is not automatically blocked, and the PIN route stays available.
PIN reset or new phone: Banks must switch biometrics off after a PIN reset until you consent again. Changing or re-binding your device also needs fresh consent.
Availability: I found no list of supported Galaxy models or software versions. Update Wallet and your phone first.
Your PIN: It stays your fallback, so remember it.

Biometric UPI is an NPCI capability, and the higher ceiling is an NPCI decision. Samsung's main contribution is fitting it into setup, security, and payment on its own phones.
For most users, the gain is small but real: one less step on routine payments. Before relying on it, review your saved fingerprints and confirm the details in your app. Convenience is welcome, but only when you stay in control of who can approve a payment.
