The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) introduced two new UPI features designed to make digital payments faster and easier to manage. This allows contactless payments, while My UPI brings multiple UPI-related services into a single platform. The features were announced at the Global Fintech Fest 2026.
Now you can make payments at compatible point-of-sale terminals by simply tapping your smartphone on the device. You just need to unlock your phone, as there’s no need for a UPI application to make the payment. The feature uses Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to establish the connection with the payment terminal.
The facility supports UPI payments as well as RuPay credit cards on UPI. The aim is to make small, everyday transactions quicker by removing several steps from scan-and-pay process.
NPCI set a Rs. 5,000 limit for UPI PIN-less transactions through the Tap & Pay facility. You should authenticate your UPI PIN when the transaction amount exceeds Rs. 5,000. This is important as the Rs. 5,000 threshold applies to the PIN-less Tap & Pay experience. It should not be confused with separate transaction or wallet limits under other UPI products.
NPCI also brings My UPI, an AI-powered customer support platform. It is built using FiMI, NPCI's small language model. It's designed to provide a single window for UPI-related services.
The platform can simplify access to payment information and UPI services across different apps and banking relationships. Other features include transaction support and security controls. This helps users respond quickly when they suspect fraudulent activity. The latest features arrive as UPI continues to handle enormous transaction volumes. UPI processed 24.51 billion transactions worth Rs. 29.82 trillion in August 2026.
