Overview:

  • FX ordered a meta-thriller reunion series called Legends, putting the original show back into the entertainment conversation

  • Much of the original cast returns, playing fictionalized versions of themselves rather than their old characters

  • Sons of Anarchy currently streams in full on Hulu, with digital purchase options elsewhere

Twelve years after it ended, Sons of Anarchy is back in the conversation. FX gave fans a real reason for that on August 19, 2026, when it ordered Legends, a limited series that brings Charlie Hunnam back with much of the original cast.

The twist: they are not playing their old characters. They are playing versions of themselves. That single choice turns a simple reunion into something new, and it is why a show that ended in 2014 is suddenly relevant again.

What Actually Triggered the Trend?

Legends is not a traditional continuation of the story. According to Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter, the returning cast members play fictionalized versions of themselves rather than stepping back into their old characters.

The official premise describes the cast reuniting at a fan convention more than a decade after the show ended. The gathering takes an unexpected turn as the line between their fictional past and real lives begins to blur. They are then pulled into a threat more dangerous than anything depicted in the original series.

Charlie Hunnam developed the project with showrunner Jonathan Groff. FX has confirmed Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi will join him, with additional casting still to be announced.

Why Are Legends Is Different From a Normal Reunion?

Most reunion projects either resurrect the original characters or bring in new casting and leave the original actors out of it. Legends does neither. Sending the actual cast in to play versions of themselves, with reality and fiction colliding, is genuinely unusual territory for a full ensemble. That format, more than nostalgia alone, is what is driving the current interest.

Mayans M.C. expanded the fictional world of Sons of Anarchy, following a different motorcycle club within the same universe. Legends is doing something else entirely: it turns the show's own cultural legacy into the premise, rather than extending the story it already told.

Kurt Sutter Is Not Behind the New Series

Legends also represents a change in creative leadership. Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is not involved in the new series, although he has publicly said he gave Hunnam his blessing to move forward with it. That distinction matters.

This is not a continuation from the person who built the original mythology. It is Hunnam, the actor who played Jax Teller, choosing to revisit the show's legacy on his own terms, with Groff as his creative partner.

Why Fans Are Revisiting the Original Series

The timing creates a natural catch-up cycle. With Legends still in development and no premiere date announced, viewers arriving through the reunion news have the complete seven-season original available to revisit.

Its seasons establish the characters, relationships, and mythology that Legends can now reference without reopening the original story, which is exactly what a meta-thriller built around the actors' own history needs in order to work.

What Happens Next With Legends

FX has not announced a premiere date, and additional casting details are still to come. The immediate next step is likely further casting and production updates rather than a quick return to streaming.

What is confirmed is the creative structure: Hunnam developed the series with Groff, both of whom serve as executive producers alongside Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn, and FX Productions and 20th Television are producing it for FX and Hulu.

Final Thought

Legends allows FX to revisit a completed franchise without altering its original ending. Its unconventional approach could demonstrate how familiar casts, established fan interest, and fresh storytelling can work together to create relevance for older television properties.
