Overview

  • OLED monitors offer deep blacks, strong contrast, and very fast response times, making them a strong choice for gamers who care about picture quality and smooth motion.

  • LCD monitors offer more choices across sizes, prices, brightness levels, and refresh rates, making them useful for gamers with different needs and budgets.

  • I would choose between OLED and LCD based on the games I play, my room, my PC, my budget, and how I use the monitor outside gaming.

The rise of PC and cloud gaming has flooded the market with capable gaming monitors. Thus, the choice isn’t anymore as simple as it used to be a few years back. All the renowned brands are offering affordable monitors with top features, including screen size, resolution, refresh rate, response time, HDR, brightness, and panel type.

However, when it comes to gaming, OLED and LCD are two of the main choices. Both can deliver a good gaming experience, but they work in different ways. OLED is known for its picture quality, while LCD has been around for much longer and gives me more options at different prices.

The difference becomes clearer when a gamer will start playing games. The display quality will impact features like dark scenes, fast movement, bright rooms, and long gaming sessions.

OLED and LCD Gaming Displays: Pros and Cons

OLED stands for Organic Light-Emitting Diode, while LCD’s full form is Liquid Crystal Display. The main difference between these two display models is how they create light. Talking about OLED screens, each pixel can light up on its own when the monitor has power, and that’s what offers OLED monitors a big advantage against their competitors.

OLED monitors have clear blacks. When a part of the picture needs to be black, the pixels can turn off. This creates very deep blacks and strong contrast. This feature is especially useful in horror games, where darkness is key to the experience.

The second feature that sets OLED screens apart is their response times. OLED screens are fast, which reduces blur when things move quickly across the screen. This can be useful in games such as racing titles and shooters, where the camera moves quickly, and the picture can stay clearer.

Today, many newer OLED gaming monitors offer high refresh rates. Some models go beyond 240Hz. If a PC can produce enough frames, the extra refresh rate can make gameplay feel very smooth.

However, there are even some downsides of OLED screens that users should know before investing. The first thing is burn-in. If the same image stays on the screen for a very long time, some OLED panels can develop permanent marks. Though newer models have features to reduce the risk, it’s not completely eliminated.

Sometimes, price can be the biggest issue. OLED monitors are now easier to find, but they may cost more than LCD models.

In comparison to OLED screens, LCD works differently. It uses a backlight behind the screen, and there are several types of LCD panels, including IPS, VA, and TN. The biggest strength of LCD is brightness. Some LCD monitors can get very bright, which helps in a game that's full of colors and light, but the same thing gets problematic when players try to run a game that’s set in a darker setting.

If gamers can avoid that issue, then LCD offers large screens, ultrawide models, high-refresh-rate displays, and high-resolution options. The best part is these monitors are affordable.

Despite all these benefits, LCD has its own limits. Since the backlight does not work on each pixel separately, black areas may look grey. This can be easier to notice in every game that is set in darkness. Some LCD screens may also show more blur during fast movement, even after modern LCD technology has improved a lot.

OLED vs LCD: Which One is Better for Gamers?

There’s no single answer to this question. It always depends on what types of games you want to play. If you are a horror game fan, LCD is never a good choice for you. Therefore, you must go for OLED. Its deep blacks and strong contrast can make games look more detailed and cinematic. Even if you are a fan of open-world games, OLED is the most suitable choice for you, as these games feature changing weather and dark areas.

Finally, competitive gamers also go for OLED for its faster response time. Well, all these are possible options if gamers are fine with the expenses. OLED monitors are pretty expensive.

Now, if the budget is the issue, gamers can easily choose an LCD monitor. If you are playing in a bright room, LCD can be an unbeatable choice. Even if you’re not gaming and spending long hours watching movies or working in the same window, LCD can be the best fit.

The Right Display Depends on How I Play

There can’t be any winner or loser when we compare LCD and OLED gaming monitors. The choice depends on what kind of games one plays the most. They both have their set of weaknesses and strengths.

While OLED gives deep blacks, strong contrast, fast response times, and a premium picture, LCD offers strong brightness, high refresh rates, different screen sizes, and lower prices. Thus, one shouldn’t buy a monitor just because it has OLED or LCD written on the box. The decision should be made based on the gaming room, budget, and the type of games you prefer playing on a regular basis.
