Smart Ring vs Smartwatch vs Screenless Fitness Band: Which Wearable Will Define 2027?

Smart rings, smartwatches and screenless fitness bands are changing the wearable market, with health tracking, longer battery life, AI insights and simpler designs set to shape 2027.

Key Takeaways

  • Smartwatches still lead the market, with IDC forecasting 159.7 million units for 2026.

  • Smart rings show faster growth, with IDC forecasting 12.8% growth and 4.9 million units in 2026.

  • Screenless bands gain momentum through lower prices, longer battery life and health-focused features.

The wearable market now faces a major shift. Smartwatches still hold a huge lead in sales, yet smart rings and screenless fitness bands have started to change what people expect from a health device. The main question for 2027 is not simply which product will sell the most. The bigger question is which form will shape the next phase of wearable technology.

Smartwatches still lead by a wide margin. IDC forecasts 159.7 million smartwatch units for 2026, compared with 40.2 million wristbands and 4.9 million smart rings. The figures show the huge scale of the watch market, while also showing the early stage of the ring category. Yet growth tells a different story. IDC expects smart rings to rise 12.8% in 2026, while smartwatches may fall 2.8% and wristbands may fall 6.8%.

Smartwatch Still Holds Lead

The smartwatch remains the strongest overall wearable. It can show messages, provide maps, support calls, handle payments, track workouts and offer live health data. Smart rings and screenless bands cannot match that range of direct functions.

Recent data also shows fresh strength at the top end of the smartwatch market. Counterpoint Research says global smartwatch shipments rose 4% year over year in Q1 2026. Apple led the market with a 23% share, while Huawei held 17% and Xiaomi had about 9%. Apple Watch shipments rose 21% in the same quarter, while Samsung shipments fell 28%.

The smartwatch also has a strong ecosystem advantage. Apple, Samsung, Google and Garmin can connect watches with phones, health apps and other services. That makes the smartwatch difficult to replace. IDC also expects the smartwatch market to return to modest growth from 2027.

Rise of Smart Ring

Smart rings have a much smaller market, yet their growth deserves close attention. IDC forecasts 4.9 million smart ring units for 2026. That number looks small beside 159.7 million smartwatches, but the ring category has much more room to expand.

Oura has helped prove that a ring can work as a serious health device. The company has sold more than 5.5 million rings in total, with more than 2.5 million sales since June 2024. Oura also targets more than $1.5 billion in revenue for 2026, while its 2025 financing put its reported value near $11 billion.

The appeal comes from the simple design. A ring has no screen, no constant alerts and no need for regular interaction. It can focus on sleep, heart rate, heart rate variability, temperature and recovery. A 2025 systematic review covered 107 studies and about 100,000 people. It found strong results for several smart ring uses, with reported correlations of r² = 0.996 for heart rate and r² = 0.980 for heart rate variability. Sleep detection showed 93% to 96% sensitivity.

Screenless Bands Enter Mainstream

Screenless fitness bands may pose the biggest threat to both rings and watches. The idea is simple: collect health data all day without adding another screen to the wrist.

Google gave this category a major boost with Fitbit Air in 2026. The device costs $100 and tracks heart rate, AFib alerts, blood oxygen, resting heart rate, HRV, sleep and other health measures. Google sends the data to its health app instead of placing a display on the device.

Garmin has also entered this space with Cirqa at $199.99. The device offers about 10 to 11 days of battery life and tracks heart rate, HRV, sleep, VO2 Max, Body Battery and Training Readiness. Garmin also keeps its core service free, while Connect+ adds paid features.

WHOOP remains a major name in this category. Its business model focuses less on the hardware and more on data, coaching and health insight. A 2026 financing round reportedly placed WHOOP's value at about $10.1 billion.

The Real Battle: Data and AI

The next stage of wearable technology may not depend on better screens or more apps. The real value may come from better health interpretation.

A basic device can report a heart rate of 68 beats per minute. A smarter health platform can compare that number with past data, sleep quality, HRV and activity, then explain what the change may mean. That shift puts more value on software, personal history and AI.

Google has already placed AI at the center of its Fitbit strategy. Oura, Garmin and WHOOP also focus on health insights rather than simple sensor readings. This trend gives screenless products a strong role in the next generation of wearables.

Which Device Will Define 2027?

The smartwatch will likely remain the market leader in 2027. Its huge installed base, strong ecosystems and wide range of functions give it a major advantage.

The smart ring may become the premium health leader. Oura has built a strong market, Samsung has helped bring the form into mainstream electronics, and research continues to support its use for several health measures.

The screenless band may become the surprise winner. Fitbit Air starts at $100, Garmin Cirqa sits at $199.99, and WHOOP serves the premium fitness market. This gives the category products across a wide price range.

The bigger trend points toward a new wearable model. The smartwatch can serve as the interactive device, while a ring or screenless band can handle passive health data. An AI health platform can then turn that data into useful advice.

For 2027, the smartwatch may win the volume race, the smart ring may lead premium health, and the screenless band may have the strongest mass-market opportunity. Yet the real winner may sit above all three: the health platform that turns constant sensor data into clear, personal and useful insight.

FAQs

1. Which wearable will lead the market in 2027?

Smartwatches will likely retain the largest market share, while rings and screenless bands may grow faster.

2. Why are smart rings gaining attention?

Smart rings offer discreet health tracking, long battery life and strong sleep and recovery features.

3. What is a screenless fitness band?

It is a wearable health tracker without a display. It collects data and sends results to a phone or health app.

4. Are smart rings better than smartwatches?

Neither is better for every use. Smartwatches offer more functions, while rings focus more on passive health tracking.

5. What will shape wearable technology in 2027?

Health sensors, AI-powered insights, longer battery life and better links between different wearable devices will shape the market.
