OpenAI revealed that ChatGPT’s short-term memory is now available to users on the free tier. This means the AI can recall details from past interactions across different chats, not just within a single session.

Users may notice ChatGPT remembering preferences, writing styles, or topics previously discussed. This move marks a significant step toward making the chatbot more consistent, helpful, and personalised, even for users on the free plan.

Plus and Pro Plans Still Offer More

While free users benefit from these improvements, paid Plus and Pro subscribers will enjoy more powerful long-term memory features. These include deeper context retention. Thus, letting the AI support ongoing projects or frequent tasks more effectively over time.

Who Has Access and How?

The memory rollout is happening globally. OpenAI has not disclosed the exact memory limits for free-tier users. In most regions, it will activate automatically. However, users in the EU, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein must enable it manually. It can be done in the following way: Settings > Personalization > Memory > Reference chat history

A Smarter Free Experience

This latest ChatGPT update brings the free-tier experience closer to premium. Thus, making the AI feel more human, helpful, and responsive. Users can now enjoy more personalized interactions without paying a dime, and still maintain full control over their privacy. It's a meaningful step toward smarter, safer, and more intuitive AI for everyone
