XRP remains one of the largest cryptocurrencies, but its ownership is distributed unevenly across Ripple, exchanges, early participants and millions of XRP Ledger accounts. September 2026 XRPScan data provides a clearer picture of this distribution, while also showing why wallet rankings should not automatically be interpreted as individual ownership.
According to XRPScan, the XRP Ledger (XRPL) recorded 8,194,963 funded accounts in September 2026. Reaching the top 1% requires a substantial balance. An account needs at least 44,596 XRP to enter this group, while the top 2% threshold is 21,757 XRP. The top 3% requires 14,002 XRP, and the top 4% begins at 10,020 XRP.
The threshold falls to 7,459 XRP for the top 5%, while an account holding approximately 2,127 XRP qualifies for the top 10%.
However, these rankings represent XRPL accounts rather than individual investors. One person can control multiple wallets, while exchange addresses can collectively custody assets belonging to thousands of customers.
Ripple ranks first among identifiable entities. XRPScan data attributes 31 accounts to Ripple, containing approximately 4.095 billion XRP, alongside roughly 35.7 billion XRP held in escrow.
Ripple originally placed 55 billion XRP into cryptographically secured escrow, creating scheduled monthly releases. Unused XRP from those releases can be placed into new escrow contracts.
Including escrow therefore makes Ripple the largest identifiable entity associated with XRP, although escrowed tokens are different from immediately available balances.
Major cryptocurrency exchanges occupy several leading positions. Upbit ranks second with approximately 6.394 billion XRP across 13 accounts. Coinbase follows with roughly 5.819 billion XRP distributed across 342 accounts, after recently identified and reorganized wallet labels increased its recognized holdings.
Binance controls approximately 2.735 billion XRP across 147 accounts, according to XRPScan-labeled wallet data.
Among other exchanges, Bithumb has roughly 1.828 billion XRP across three accounts. Bitbank holds approximately 573.7 million XRP in two accounts, while Coincheck controls about 553.7 million XRP across two addresses.
These exchange holdings should not be considered corporate-owned XRP since substantial portions can represent customer deposits.
Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen remains among the largest identifiable individual-associated XRP holders. Seven addresses linked to Larsen collectively contain approximately 2.533 billion XRP.
The figure demonstrates how early XRP participants continue to feature prominently alongside Ripple and major exchanges.
Why this Matters
XRP rich-list data helps reveal supply concentration, exchange liquidity and Ripple’s escrow position. However, wallet balances do not equal individual ownership since exchanges custody customer assets and single entities can control multiple addresses, making careful interpretation essential.
Ripple remains the largest identifiable XRP holder when its escrow balances are included.
Major exchanges also control billions of XRP in custodial wallets representing customer funds.
On-chain labels can also change over time. Therefore, wallet rankings reveal concentration, but they do not provide a perfect ranking of individual beneficial owners.
