Ripple USD (RLUSD) is becoming an increasingly important part of the XRP Ledger’s (XRPL) liquidity strategy. Unlike XRP, whose market price fluctuates, RLUSD is designed to maintain a 1:1 value with the US dollar and is backed by segregated reserves of cash and cash equivalents.

That combination gives XRPL something increasingly important for payments and tokenized finance: a native dollar-denominated asset that can trade directly against XRP and other issued tokens.

RLUSD Is Building Significant Scale

RLUSD has expanded rapidly since launching in late 2024. By August 2026, the stablecoin had reached approximately $1.76 billion in market capitalization, reflecting growing institutional demand for dollar-denominated blockchain settlement.

Its distribution has also widened. Binance announced RLUSD spot trading in January 2026 with XRP/RLUSD and RLUSD/USDT pairs, initially supporting Ethereum and planning XRPL support.

More exchange availability can deepen trading markets by bringing additional buyers, sellers and market makers into RLUSD pairs.

RLUSD Can Add Dollar Liquidity to XRPL’s DEX

XRPL has a decentralized exchange built directly into the protocol, alongside Automated Market Makers introduced through XLS-30.

AMMs hold two assets and allow users to provide liquidity in return for LP tokens and trading fees. XRPL’s payment engine can automatically route trades through order books, AMMs or a combination of both to obtain an efficient rate.

This means deeper XRP/RLUSD pools could make it easier to move between a volatile bridge asset and dollar-denominated liquidity.

For example, XRPL pathfinding could execute a transaction from one issued currency into RLUSD through XRP when that route offers the best available price.

Stablecoin Liquidity Could Expand Cross-Border Payments

Ripple is already building around this model. In June 2026, Ripple and Bitso announced that Mexican peso-backed MXNB would join XRPL payment infrastructure alongside RLUSD. The aim is to support more efficient liquidity and settlement between the US and Mexico.

Such markets could eventually create liquidity paths such as:

USD → RLUSD → XRP → MXNB → MXN

The exact route would depend on available liquidity and pricing rather than requiring XRP in every transaction. RLUSD is also being incorporated into newer use cases. Ripple's June 2026 XRPL AI Starter Kit supports XRP and RLUSD for machine-to-machine payments using X402 infrastructure.

XRP and RLUSD Can Serve Different Roles

RLUSD does not necessarily remove the need for XRP. RLUSD provides stable dollar liquidity, while XRP can serve as a bridge between otherwise fragmented trading pairs. More RLUSD activity could consequently increase the number of useful liquidity routes involving XRP rather than simply competing with it.

Final Thoughts

RLUSD could make XRPL liquidity deeper and more practical by providing a native dollar asset for payments, trading and tokenized finance.

If adoption continues, the larger effect may be a more interconnected liquidity network where RLUSD provides stable value, XRP provides bridging liquidity, and XRPL’s DEX and AMMs automatically connect the two.

FAQs:

1. What is RLUSD?

RLUSD is Ripple’s US dollar-backed stablecoin designed to maintain a 1:1 value with the dollar. It is backed by reserve assets and is intended for payments, trading, treasury activity and blockchain settlement.

2. How could RLUSD improve XRP Ledger liquidity?

RLUSD can create additional dollar-denominated trading pairs on XRPL’s built-in DEX and AMMs. More active pairs can attract market makers and give users additional routes for moving between XRP, stablecoins and issued assets.

3. Does RLUSD compete directly with XRP?

Not necessarily. RLUSD provides price stability, while XRP can serve as a bridge asset between currencies and liquidity pools. The two assets can therefore perform different roles within the same payment or trading route.

4. How can RLUSD support cross-border payments?

RLUSD can act as a digital dollar settlement asset, while XRPL pathfinding can route payments through XRP or other available liquidity when appropriate. Integrations with assets such as MXNB could expand fiat-to-fiat settlement options.

5. Why are XRPL AMMs important for RLUSD?

AMMs allow users to supply pairs such as XRP/RLUSD and earn trading fees while providing liquidity. Deeper pools can reduce slippage and make larger conversions between XRP and dollar-denominated assets more efficient.
