The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has been the center of discussion recently. The biggest rumor that’s going around the gaming world for a while includes the remake of Oblivion, the most successful title in The Elder Scrolls franchise.
Now that the gaming world is going through the trend of making remakes or remasters of iconic titles, it will be nice to get the most popular The Elder Scrolls game once again on new-gen consoles. However, fueling this speculation a bit further, the new reports say that the game has shifted to Unreal Engine 5.
While this promises great visuals, there are some threats as well that can ruin the entire experience on PC.
For gamers who are unaware of this entire scenario, here’s a quick recap about how things started. Just like Skyrim and TES 4, Oblivion is the biggest title of The Elder Scrolls series. Therefore, gamers have been curious about a remake for a long time, but Bethesda Game Studios has been entirely silent about it throughout.
However, last year, a Microsoft document regarding Bethesda’s unannounced work was leaked online and it had Oblivion on it, hinting that Bethesda has this game into consideration. At that point, nothing much was heard about the game or any remake in progression.
The burning rumors started to kick off as soon as Xbox Developer Direct 2025 was announced with a surprise game to be unveiled. Xbox fans have assumed that it’s going to be the Oblivion Remake.
While a group of fans is convinced that the game is in the making, others ask for evidence to believe that rumor. At this point, there’s no concrete proof to state that Oblivion Remake is really coming this year, or even that it’s actually existing. There are only a few hints that indicate its existence.
Recently, the LinkedIn profile of Oleksii Moskovchenko, a technical art director at Virtuos, has shared that they have been working on a remake game. The name is not mentioned anywhere, but fans have taken it to be Oblivion Remake.
This speculation didn’t come out of the blue. In July 2023, another Virtuos employee claimed that they were working on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remake.
The Elder Scrolls franchise has a massive fanbase that loves to grind these games a lot. However, no game is flawless, and that’s what happened when it comes to this iconic IP. The downtime has always been a vital trouble in The Elder Scrolls games. Additionally, even after its groundbreaking success, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion never received the proper post-game attention that it deserves.
However, the latest rumors bring to light new information, and among them, the most exciting one suggests that Bethesda is abandoning the Oblivion Engine for the development of Oblivion Remake and shifting to Unreal Engine 5.
Apparently, it sounds great, but the real scenario is pretty different. Bethesda has indeed provided the gaming world with some of the incredible games, but this studio has a bad track record when it comes to technical achievements. Therefore, this shift is definitely a cause of concern.
With The Elder Scrolls 6 far away from release, it is a good idea to release a remake version of the most iconic The Elder Scrolls title to bridge the gap. However, the problem lies in the fact that switching engines may cause trouble and ruin the fun of the original game.
Unreal Engine 5 is renowned for appealing visuals, but whenever developers use too many features from UE5 to make the game visually stunning, games start lagging in performance. If this happens to Oblivion Remake, it will ruin the entire gameplay experience.
Anyway, changing the engine suggests that a full-scale remake will probably release some time in 2025 with some advanced features while keeping the core features of the game intact. As the latest rumors suggest that the remake is taking inspirations from other Souls-like titles and making some changes to the blocking and stamina system.
Blocking wasn’t a very effective system in the OG title; rather, it was kind of frustrating. Therefore, taking some inspiration from other Souls-like games, if Bethesda reworks that to make it more suitable for players, it will definitely work positively for the remake.
For the Stamina system, this goes as well. In the original game, it is less appealing and more complicated. If the developer team makes some changes to the Stamina HUD to make it aesthetically appealing to the new-gen players, the remake will get more success than the original one.
Taking some inspiration from other games to redesign some features is okay. A touch of modernity will fit into the storyline, but if the team overdoes things, they will probably destroy an iconic game.
