The Indian benchmarks witnessed mixed momentum on Thursday after yesterday’s positive session; this amid weak global cues as the Federal Reserve held interest rates at 3.50%-3.75%. Sensex rose 273.55 points or 0.35% to finish at 77,928.15, and the Nifty ended above the 24,300 mark at 24,317.15, gaining 0.27%. Bank Nifty, however, declined 58.40 points or 0.10%, settling at 57,147.50. India VIX gained 1.23%.

Oil prices moved higher on Thursday after the US launched a ‘heavy wave’ of strikes against Iran late Wednesday in retaliation against its missile attacks on American forces, dashing hopes for de-escalation. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has threatened further escalation in response. Brent crude futures gained 1.5% to $92.10 a barrel. US West Texas Intermediate futures advanced 0.9% to $85.23 per barrel.

Top Gainers

Market sentiment remained selective during the session, with investors showing interest in automobile, mining, and manufacturing stocks. Mahindra & Mahindra emerged as the top gainer, rising 2.26%, followed by Maruti Suzuki, Coal India, Eicher Motors, and TVS Motor, supported by buying across auto and industrial counters.

Top Losers

On the downside, Adani Ports led the losses, falling 3.38%, while HDFC Life and Shriram Finance also traded lower. Jio Financial Services and SBI Life Insurance witnessed modest declines as investors booked profits in select financial and insurance stocks amid cautious market sentiment.

What Moved Markets Today?

The benchmarks rose on buying in select heavyweights, while the mid and small-cap segments witnessed profit booking after the US Federal Reserve decided to hold interest rates.

Expectations are rising that the central bank may raise rates in September as the ongoing Middle East conflict has raised inflation risks. Three out of 12 policymakers voted in favour of a rate hike on 29 July.

The rupee closed at 95.68 per US dollar, ‌little changed from 95.6475 in the previous session. Overall, the Indian stock market ended on a mixed note, with gains in auto and mining stocks supporting the benchmark indices. However, persistent global uncertainties and geopolitical tensions kept investor sentiment cautious.
