Physiotherapy has advanced beyond the scope of conventional rehabilitation techniques. Modern technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and fitness trackers are changing the sector by not only improving patient outcomes but also making care more individualized.
In the latest episode of the Analytics Insight Podcast, host Priya Dialani speaks with Vijay Karunakaran, CEO and founder of Rewin Health, to discuss how AI and digital therapeutics have turned patient rehabilitation into a measurable, interactive, and accessible experience for people living in different parts of India.
Priya starts the conversation and highlights the challenges, including inconsistent therapy and limited access to quality care. “Physiotherapy has long been essential to healing and rehabilitation, helping millions restore their mobility, strength, and quality of life,” she states.
Vijay agrees with her and notes that AI integration ensures more precise, individualized care. “AI functions more like a digital co-therapist. It tracks every movement, posture, and effort in real time. If a patient shows fatigue or imbalance, the AI slows down the pace and provides corrective feedback. If the patient progresses, it introduces more complex challenges,” he explains.
Rewin Health combines AI, virtual reality, motion sensors, and clinical analytics to create a full-stack digital therapeutics platform. Vijay shares, “Instead of doing monotonous exercises, patients are immersed in real-life, culturally familiar environments. Walking through a Shirdi temple or exploring a beach, patients perform physical and cognitive exercises disguised as engaging activities. Each improvement is measured, giving therapists actionable insights while turning rehabilitation into a joyful, gamified experience.”
The platform is highly versatile and caters to a range of needs, including neuro- and stroke-rehabilitation, orthopedic recovery, pain management, cardiac rehabilitation, and geriatric mobility training. Additionally, scaling is achieved through clinics, franchises, and public-private partnerships to provide rehabilitation services within 5 kilometers of each patient.
Vijay concludes, “Our mission is to make rehabilitation scientific, personalized, and joyful. We are transforming rehabilitation from an afterthought into a guided, measurable, and motivating journey for everyone.”
Clinical studies have shown that VR-based therapy increases patient compliance by more than 80% and achieves an overall effectiveness of over 75% compared with conventional physiotherapy.
