Meet the Circus Autonomy One (CA-1), an AI-powered robotic kitchen developed by Munich-based Circus SE. Housed inside a compact seven-square-meter glass enclosure, it prepares fresh meals automatically without chefs or kitchen staff, bringing restaurant-style cooking into a fully autonomous system.
The robot uses dual robotic arms to collect ingredients from climate-controlled storage, cook them on induction burners, plate each meal with precision, and even clean itself after every order. The entire cooking process runs with minimal human involvement.
Speed is one of the CA-1's biggest strengths. It can prepare up to 120 fresh meals every hour—roughly one dish every 30 seconds. Customers simply order through a touchscreen or voice interface, and the robot handles the rest.
Powered by the proprietary CircusOS platform, the system continuously monitors cooking time, temperature, ingredient usage, and food quality. AI also helps reduce food waste by optimizing meal production based on customer demand.
The CA-1 is designed to cook a wide variety of dishes, including pasta, curries, soups, bowls, stir-fries, grilled meals, and desserts. Its modular design allows restaurants and retailers to update menus and introduce new recipes with ease.
The robotic kitchen is already being tested inside REWE supermarkets in Germany, where shoppers can order freshly prepared meals directly from the AI-powered system. The pilot aims to evaluate customer experience, performance, and operational efficiency.
While supporters say robotic kitchens can solve labor shortages, lower operating costs, and deliver consistent food quality, critics worry about job losses and the reduced role of human chefs. Even so, AI-powered restaurants are becoming a growing global trend.
