CBS is expanding the Yellowstone universe with a new spin-off titled Marshals. The franchise has brought Luke Grimes back for the upcoming show. Grimes played Kayce Dutton on Yellowstone, and now the character is moving on. The premiere is set for March 2026 and will follow Kayce as he joins an elite US Marshals unit in Montana.

The announcement confirms that Yellowstone has wrapped up its flagship story, but the franchise is far from over.

Saddle Up Again: ‘Marshals’ Sets its CBS Premiere

Marshals will premiere on 1 March 2026, at 8 p.m. on CBS.  After the premiere, the show will be streamed on Paramount+. The series is now shifting from ranch politics to high-stakes fugitive hunts. Kayce will now step into a new role and work with a US Marshals team tasked with tracking criminals across the West.

Kayce's new look has amazed fans. According to reports, Marshals allows the show’s creators to explore the military backstory of Dutton, including some Special Forces skills. The first episode will show the audience Dutton unlocking a smartphone using a dead man’s eye. This talent of the character was never explored in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone.

About his new role and abilities, Grims has revealed, “We barely scratched the surface of that. In a way, it was kind of a blessing because we have all that stuff to explore now without it feeling like we just made some stuff up.”

From Quiet Ranch Life to Federal Badge: Why Fans Want More Kayce

In Yellowstone, Kayce Dutton ended on a peaceful note. After years of violence and family turmoil, he chose a simpler life with Monica and Tate. For many fans, that’s the exact end the character deserved.

However, Kayce’s past as a Navy SEAL and his strong moral code have always suggested that there must be things to explore. That’s one of the primary reasons behind fans getting excited seeing him back.

Marshals promises to dig deeper into the internal conflicts of Kayce while placing him in challenging situations he has never faced before. Early reactions show curiosity about how his personal life will blend with the demands of federal duty.

A New Frontier for the Yellowstone Universe

Kayce Dutton’s return signals a strategic expansion of the franchise. The upcoming show is going to place the fan-favorite character from Yellowstone in a crime-focused format to cater to audiences who have been loyal to the series.

If Marshals succeed, it will prove that Dutton’s story can evolve further. Instead of repeating the same battles, the series can find new ways to do justice to the character.
