WhatsApp is testing a Meta AI tool that expands photos on iPhone, according to feature tracker WABetaInfo. The report comes from a site that tracks WhatsApp beta builds. The option has reached some iOS beta testers who install the latest update through Apple’s TestFlight app.

The tool lets Meta AI extend a picture so it fits a new frame. Android beta testers got the same feature earlier, with the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.44.8 update. WhatsApp has not said when the tool will reach all users or which regions will get it first.

How the AI Photo Expansion Tool Works

WABetaInfo first spotted the tool in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.33.2 update. It sits in the drawing editor, so people can use it as part of the editing steps they already know. Meta AI adds a new image area so the photo fits the 9:16 format, even when the original is square or landscape.

The quality of the result depends on how much context the original photo gives. A photo with plenty of background should give Meta AI more to work with.

WhatsApp shows the option only when the photo is not already in a supported format. A 1:1 square image is a good way to check whether the feature is available on an account.

More Meta AI Photo Tools Are Coming to WhatsApp

This is the latest in a string of Meta AI image tools on the app. WhatsApp began rolling out AI image generation for status updates in October 2025, where users type a prompt and Meta AI creates several variations. It has also tested AI-made profile photos and group icons on iOS. Meta has been adding AI across its apps, and WhatsApp is a key place for that push.

The expansion tool is still in beta, so WhatsApp may change it before a wider launch. Users who want to try it can install the latest beta from TestFlight, though access is limited to select accounts.
