Sony is changing its PlayStation 5 strategy as the console moves into the latter half of its life cycle. Instead of aggressively pushing more hardware sales, the company is turning its attention towards generating more revenue from its existing PlayStation user base.
Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki said the company no longer needs to focus heavily on selling additional PS5 consoles. The shift reflects Sony’s growing emphasis on recurring revenue from software, subscriptions and digital services.
The PS5 already established a substantial global footprint. Sony said, “ The console sold more than 95 million units worldwide as of June 30, 2026. PlayStation also has around 125 million monthly active users across its ecosystem.”
With such a large installed base, Sony gets an opportunity to generate more revenue from existing players rather than relying solely on new console purchases. Services such as PlayStation Plus, digital games, and additional content are therefore becoming increasingly important to the company’s strategy.
Sony’s figures show the PS5 generation delivered strong financial results. The company describes it as its most profitable PlayStation generation to date. Reportedly, more than $136 billion was raised in sales and $13 billion in operations.
Sony’s strategy also reflects the rapid shift from physical games towards digital purchases. Digital downloads accounted for 78% of full-game unit purchases during the fiscal year ended March 2026.
