Resident Evil Requiem Review: Grace’s Fear and Leon’s Firepower Make a Deadly Combo

Resident Evil Requiem Review Highlights Dual Protagonists and a Fresh Survival Horror Experience!
Published on

Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline entry in the franchise, is running gracefully. The new approach with two dual protagonists has earned praise from gamers. Capcom pairs the newly introduced Grace Ashcroft with the fan-favorite Leon S. Kennedy. This combination offers a well-balanced combo of classic survival horror and action-heavy gameplay.

The most recent installment of the franchise emphasizes character-based storytelling. Leon displays his usual combat skills. However, Grace shows a different approach to survival that makes her character more fragile. As per the critics, the contrast between these two characters creates a balanced experience that constantly shifts between fear and firepower.

Grace Takes the Spotlight While Leon Delivers the Action

Resident Evil Requiem revolves around Grace. What makes her unique is that Grace is not a trained fighter like previous RE protagonists. She is an FBI officer who is accidentally trapped in a terrifying zombie outbreak with limited resources. The twist here is that Grace has no prior experience of fighting undead enemies.

She is an expert in stealth, careful exploration, and solving puzzles. While playing as Grace, players must hide from enemies, keep their ammo in check, and rely on the environment to stay alive. This approach makes Grace’s side of the story more intense.

Leon S. Kennedy, on the other hand, is a veteran agent. He has fought undeads multiple times. So, he presents a sharp contrast. Leon is more confident and has powerful weapons. His gameplay emphasizes combat. From the beginning, he gets into boss fights using his arsenal of firearms and close-range attacks.

The shift between Grace’s fear and Leon’s firepower creates the thrill in the game. The storyline allows players to see the outbreak from two different perspectives.

Horror Atmosphere and a Dark Narrative

Like most other Resident Evil series games, Requiem is mostly based on traditional elements of survival horror. Throughout the game, Grace mostly explores dark locations like abandoned medical facilities, all filled with infected creatures and disturbing enemies.

One of the most terrifying parts of Grace’s storyline involves the monster that chases Grace through dark ceilings and corridors. This enemy gives jumpscares, forcing players to stay cautious while navigating dark basements.

As the story progresses, players gradually get to know the original reason behind the outbreak and both characters’ connection to it. Grace’s experiences are full of fear and uncertainty, while Leon is more determined to uncover the truth.

The storytelling structure allows the game to switch between slow and suspenseful exploration. It maintains the tension throughout without boring the players for a single moment.

How Are Players Reacting to Grace as a New Lead?

With early reviews from players, Requiem has surpassed one of the finest entries of the series, Resident Evil 4. Fans have appreciated how Grace’s vulnerability brings the classic feeling of horror back into the franchise.

Leon’s presence ensures the action that players expect from the series. The combination of human emotion and firepower creates perfectly balanced gameplay.

It is still too early to say whether Grace will become the next main character of the franchise. However, her presence has created a strong impression in the community. The focus on fear, survival, and human emotions makes her a valuable addition to the Resident Evil universe.
