Qualcomm has secured a major agreement with SpaceX to supply technology for the company's planned Starlink Mobile 5G network in the United States. The multi-year deal will see Qualcomm provide radio equipment, baseband units, and software for a nationwide terrestrial wireless network.
Deployment is expected to begin in 2027, with the infrastructure planned across tens of thousands of macro cell sites. Qualcomm described the agreement as the largest 5G deal in its history. However, the companies have not disclosed their financial terms.
The agreement marks a significant step in Qualcomm's efforts to expand its presence in telecom infrastructure. The company is widely known for supplying processors and connectivity technology for smartphones, but the SpaceX partnership gives it a larger role in building next-generation wireless networks.
Qualcomm's technology is expected to support a flexible, multi-band network architecture. Its radio systems and advanced beamforming capabilities are designed to improve coverage, network capacity and spectrum efficiency. The deal also puts Qualcomm in competition with established infrastructure suppliers, including Marvell, Broadcom and Intel.

SpaceX intends to combine Starlink's satellite connectivity with ground-based 5G infrastructure. The strategy could help the company move beyond satellite-based mobile coverage and compete more directly with established US telecom operators such as AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.
The terrestrial network will initially focus on 5G services, while its architecture is designed to support future connectivity upgrades and network intelligence features. SpaceX has already taken steps to secure the spectrum needed for its wireless ambitions. Its recent spectrum-related moves have strengthened plans to build a hybrid network that connects users through both satellites and traditional ground infrastructure.

Despite the agreement, creating a nationwide mobile network will require substantial investment and infrastructure development. SpaceX will also face competition from operators with decades of experience in network deployment and customer service.
The Qualcomm partnership provides an important technological foundation, but Starlink Mobile's success will depend on how quickly SpaceX can build its network and attract subscribers.
