More than 1,100 employees from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, and many more leading tech companies have signed a petition to appeal to the US government to prepare necessary measures to control the rapid advancement of AI. The letter was sent to the White House and signed by eminent personalities like Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Claude Code’s head Boris Cherny, OpenAI co-founders John Schulman and Wojciech Zaremba, and Meta’s vice-president of AI research Dawn Song.

The letter says, “It is hard to predict exactly how much this will accelerate AI progress, but there is a real risk that capability development rapidly accelerates beyond our ability to understand or control the resulting systems. Thus, the employees and CEOs have requested the government to support an international effort to develop the technical and governance tools needed to deliberately pace the frontier of automated AI development.”

The problem they are concerned about is that companies are now in a race to build advanced AI models, which leaves them with no time to fully address risks and deploy security measures. Recently, an OpenAI automated model broke its sandbox ecosystem and hacked into HuggingFace’s internal systems, highlighting the risk of AI going out of control. Therefore, a government protocol is required to control this progression.

AI Innovation and AI Safety Are Pulling in Different Directions

Every major AI company wants to build better and smarter models before its rivals. Governments also see AI as important for the economy and national security. This race has pushed companies to release new technology more quickly.

At the same time, many experts believe safety should come first. Powerful AI should go through proper checks before it reaches the public. The petition argues that business goals and competition should not come before public safety.

Preparing Today for Tomorrow's AI

The petitioners are not asking for an immediate pause in AI research. They simply want the government to have a plan ready if advanced AI becomes difficult to control. They believe acting early is better than reacting after a crisis.

As AI continues to improve, governments, researchers, and technology companies will need to work together. Finding the right balance between new ideas and public safety may become one of the biggest challenges for the industry in the years ahead.
