OpenAI unveiled GPT-6.1 Sol, a new model designed for complex coding, computer use and professional workflows. The tech giant claims that the model nearly matches GPT-6 Astra on several demanding tasks while carrying substantially lower API pricing.
OpenAI describes, “GPT-6.1 Sol is an upgrade to GPT-6 Sol that delivers performance close to its more capable Astra model. The model focuses on agentic coding, computer use, and professional workloads that require multi-step reasoning and tool use.”
The model supports a 1.05-million-token context window and up to 128,000 output tokens. Developers can also use features such as web search, file search, code interpreter, computer use, image generation, and hosted shell through the Responses API.
Cost remains a major part of the launch. GPT-6.1 Sol costs USD 2 per million input tokens and USD 10 per million output tokens under standard pricing. GPT-6 Astra costs USD 10 for input and USD 50 for output. Thus, bringing Sol at one-fifth of Astra's standard token rates.
OpenAI's evaluations show that GPT-6.1 Sol closes much of the performance gap with Astra, although it does not match Astra across every test.
On HealthBench Professional, Sol recorded a length-adjusted score of 64.2 compared with Astra's 64.7. On SEC-Bench Pro, it scored 78.8%, below Astra's 85.4%. Sol also reached 35.1% on ExploitGym, compared with 42.4% for Astra.
GPT-6.1 Sol arrives as OpenAI expands its GPT-6 model lineup and gives developers another option between cost and capability. Its combination of a large context window, agentic tools and lower token pricing targets businesses building AI agents and complex software workflows.
