OpenAI has launched Dots, a new generation of personal AI agents designed to continue working on tasks in the background after users close the chat window. The agents were announced at DevDay in San Francisco on Tuesday and are powered by GPT-6 Astra.
The launch comes just weeks after Meta’s Muse climbed to the top of the app download charts, putting the two companies in direct competition in the growing AI agent space.
Each Dot gets its own cloud computer and browser and can connect to more than 4,000 apps. Users can receive updates, questions and decision requests from their agents as tasks progress.
The rollout begins today for ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise users in eligible markets, with one Dot per user initially.
Users can name and customize their Dots, which appear as small cartoon-style avatars. OpenAI has shown avatars in colors including pink, blue and purple, with names such as Iggy, Felipe and Jojo.
Dots can be accessed through ChatGPT on desktop, web and mobile, as well as through voice calls, Slack and Microsoft Teams. Texting support is coming soon. Users can also open the agent’s cloud computer to see what it is doing.

OpenAI is placing significant emphasis on safeguards. Dots work with connected apps using read-only tools, meaning they cannot send messages, alter app content, or control a user’s browser or computer.
Installing software or changing a password requires user approval. Saved passwords can be used for sign-ins without the model seeing them.
The safety focus comes after recent concerns involving AI agents. A YouTuber said Meta’s Muse gave his home address to a stranger on Facebook Marketplace. OpenAI’s own agents were also reportedly involved with US government websites over the summer. The company said it would hold back GPT-6.1 Astra over safety concerns.
ChatGPT Pro is available in USD 100 and USD 200 monthly tiers, with the first Dot included and extended limits during the first month. OpenAI plans to introduce more Dots and options to increase their speed or monthly workload.
For businesses, OpenAI has previewed specialist Dots with their own identities, credentials, and access to company systems, while working with Microsoft to bring them into Agent 365.
