OpenAI is now releasing GPT-5.1, one of the most important upgrades to ChatGPT so far. The chatbot will be equipped with two new models, GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking. This addition is expected to make the AI agent even smarter, faster, and more pleasant to communicate with.
The new models, according to OpenAI, are improvements over existing models in both communication and intelligence; hence, users will experience a different interaction with the AI.
The main feature of GPT-5.1 Instant model is its ability to handle quick, natural conversations. It is much better at understanding context and instructions, offering clearer and more accurate answers, and is more conversational than previous versions.
One of the important improvements is adaptive reasoning, which allows the model to determine when it is best to wait a little longer to ‘think’ before giving a response to a more difficult question.
In contrast, GPT-5.1 Thinking adjusts the speed of its replies according to the complexity of the question. It is quick for easy prompts and meticulous with hard problems, as the model needs more time to understand the details. According to OpenAI, its responses are much clearer, better organized, and free of technical jargon, making it suitable for detailed work.
Models are rolling out gradually, starting with paid users on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Go, Business, and Enterprise plans. Free-tier users will be introduced later, says OpenAI, as it begins a phased rollout of the models.

Along with GPT-5.1, OpenAI has also released new customization options that allow users to tailor the tone, warmth, and expressiveness of ChatGPT. New style presets include Default, Friendly, Efficient, Professional, Candid, and Quirky, though older favorites like Cynical and Nerdy are still available. Users might soon be able to toggle even how often ChatGPT deploys emojis.
OpenAI says these updates mark “a step toward a ChatGPT that feels like it fits you, smarter, more enjoyable to talk to, and more adaptable to your preferences.” It remains to be seen how the integration of these models bolsters the chatbot’s capabilities to stay ahead in the competitive AI market.
