OnePlus officially announced the design of its upcoming OnePlus 16. The phone is expected to launch in China soon, possibly this month. The device will be available in three colors: Tomorrow’s Starlight, Dark Forest, and Mars Masterpiece. One version stands out with a glowing rear panel. The company calls it the Interstellar Light Effect. It can light up for calls, notifications, music, charging, and gaming.
The OnePlus 16 continues the flat shape used on recent OnePlus phones. However, the official announcement showed a silk glass finish and a 165Hz display. Additionally, the smartphone is also confirmed to launch with ColorOS 17. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro is expected to power it.
The device comes with a 9,000mAh battery with 100W wired and 50W wireless charging. The battery life is one of the most notable upgrades that OnePlus 16 offers over OnePlus 15’s 7,300mAh battery. A 200MP main camera and two 50MP cameras are also tipped.
The rear lighting is the biggest visual change. It is not meant to replace the screen. Instead, it gives users a quick way to notice calls, alerts, or other actions. The lights can also react while music is playing or the phone is charging. This could make the rear panel more than just a design feature.

Nothing already made rear lights a key part of its phones with the Glyph interface. Other brands have also tried rear screens, lights, and changing colors. OnePlus is using a similar idea but giving it its own set of uses. The real test will be how often people find the lights useful after the novelty wears off.
The OnePlus 16 does not completely change the look of the series. Instead, OnePlus is adding a bright new detail to a familiar design. If the lighting works well in everyday use, it could give the phone a clear identity without changing the basic OnePlus look.
