Millions of smartphone users could soon face a major disruption. WhatsApp has decided to drop support for several aging Android devices. The change will be implemented in September this year and will affect phones running Android 5 and 5.1. These versions were released more than a decade ago and are no longer supported by most manufacturers.
WhatsApp isn’t just a chat app for many. Over the years, the Meta-platform has grown into the primary way to send messages, share photos, and stay in touch with family and work contacts. When support ends, the app may stop working completely or stop receiving updates. This can leave users exposed to security risks and technical problems.
Data security has become a major issue in recent times. Platforms have been taking necessary measures to protect user data. To stay relevant in the race, WhatsApp has confirmed it is withdrawing support for older Android versions.
Starting in the second week of September (September 8), devices running Android versions below 6.0 won’t support the app. Users will need to upgrade to a newer device or operating system to continue using the service.
This decision will affect a large number of people worldwide. A substantial number of users in India, Brazil, and Southeast Asian countries still use older smartphones. Android 17 is near, but the affordability of the older devices makes them popular among users.
Most of these devices do not receive software updates from their manufacturers. A system requires updates to support the latest application features. Outdated systems pose challenges for companies like WhatsApp in providing their users with safe and reliable services.
Meta declared performance, security, and compatibility as the main reasons for ending support. Older Android devices lack the tools needed to protect user data.
Android 5.0 or 5.1 no longer receives patches to fix vulnerabilities. Hackers can exploit these weaknesses to access messages, files, or personal information. In some cases, malware can spread more easily on outdated devices.
Another problem is encryption support. Modern messaging apps are end-to-end encrypted to make the conversations private. Older Android versions may not support the latest encryption standards. They can’t work smoothly with the current security frameworks used by modern apps.
As new features are coming, compatibility becomes harder. Video calling improvements, cloud backups, and stronger privacy controls require newer systems. Older phones simply do not have the hardware or software to support them.

WhatsApp isn’t alone in raising the bar of system requirements. A lot of major tech companies, including Google, Facebook, and others, have taken similar steps to secure their platform’s data protection systems. These apps often block support for the older devices to avoid data leaks and scams.
This trend, however, indicates how fast mobile technology has been evolving. As devices age, they fall short of modern standards. So, for those who are still using older devices, the message is clear, they have to update to a newer model, and that’s not a choice, but a necessity to run WhatsApp.
