Morrowind Gets a Dual-Screen Mod for Android Handhelds

A fan-made mod called OpenMW-DS brings Morrowind to dual-screen Android handhelds like the AYN Thor. It shows the game on one screen and menus on the other. Players need their own copy. Another fan is also trying to port the game to the Nintendo DS.

A fan-made mod now lets players run The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind on dual-screen Android handhelds like the AYN Thor. The project is called OpenMW-DS. It puts the game on one screen and the menus on the other.

Developer Josh Daniels built it on OpenMW, an open-source engine that recreates the original game. The mod gives the 2002 RPG a Nintendo DS-style layout.

How OpenMW-DS Works

The mod splits the game in two. The top screen shows the world, where you walk, fight, and explore. The bottom screen holds the inventory, map, journal, and character stats.

Morrowind has a lot of menus. Players open them all the time, so this setup saves a lot of switching. You no longer have to cover the game view just to check your items or read a quest note. The game itself does not change. Only the way its screens are laid out is different.

This is not an official Bethesda release. The mod runs through the Android version of OpenMW, and users must set up the files on their own devices. It also does not come with the game. Players need their own legal copy of Morrowind.

A Separate Effort for the Nintendo DS

Another fan is working on something even bolder. A developer who goes by FirefighterTrick6476 wants to run Morrowind on a real Nintendo DS.

That is a hard job. The old handheld has very little power, and Morrowind is a big game. So far, the developer has basic scripting working. Menus for the inventory, map, journal and stats are also in place.

Fans Keep the Game Alive

Morrowind is well over 20 years old yet people still enjoy it. A lot of fans are eagerly awaiting news about The Elder Scrolls VI, and such projects allow them to have something to entertain themselves until then.

Neither project is an official port. However, both are demonstrations of what can be achieved with open-source software and fan dedication. Both provide a new experience of playing an old game.
