Microsoft is all set to unify the Xbox ecosystem. Leaks from several publications suggest that the company plans to bring Xbox 360 games to Windows PCs. This will allow gamers to revisit one of Xbox's most celebrated game libraries without an Xbox console. Microsoft is yet to make any official announcement.
According to a new report, “Microsoft is reportedly working on a major expansion of its backward compatibility programme that could let developers bring Xbox 360 games to PCs, future Xbox consoles, the rumoured Project Helix device, and even upcoming handhelds.”
Games from Xbox 360 will work on both Windows PC and Xbox handhelds. It's also compatible with their upcoming next-generation Xbox console, which is codenamed Project Helix. This expansion of the program is set to start in 2027 and end by 2028.
The roadmap also outlines a new disc-to-digital feature for Xbox One and Xbox Series X owners. The system would allow players to convert eligible physical game discs into digital licenses linked to both the disc and their Microsoft account.
The company steadily expanded Xbox games across Windows PCs, cloud gaming, and handheld devices. Bringing Xbox 360 titles to these platforms would strengthen game preservation while giving players greater flexibility to access older purchases across multiple devices.
Microsoft is yet to announce the program publicly. Until then, gamers should treat the reported features, launch windows, and supported titles as unconfirmed. Even so, the leak offers the clearest indication yet that Microsoft's backward compatibility ambitions extend well beyond today's Xbox consoles.
