
Meta is expanding its AI-driven Reels translation feature on Instagram and Facebook, allowing creators to voice-over their videos in Hindi and Portuguese. The feature, initially introduced in English and Spanish in August, aims to make short video content more widely accessible across languages and geographies.
Announcing the update, Instagram Head Adam Mosseri shared on his Instagram handle, “You can now translate your Reels between English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Hindi. It’s been exciting to see how this helps connect people and creators across language barriers. More languages to come soon.” The post also had an interesting video featuring the Instagram head.
To illustrate, Mosseri toggled between Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese via Meta AI, demonstrating how content creators could create multilingual Reels. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg also posted a similar demo on his Instagram account, pointing to Meta’s efforts to integrate AI with user innovation.
The function utilizes artificial intelligence voice cloning technology to replicate the original tone and voice of the creator. This speech is translated into various languages through an advanced AI. The method guarantees the authenticity of the creator’s voice.
Additionally, Meta has included a voluntary lip-syncing function that synchronizes the audio to the person's mouth movements, creating a virtually seamless and lifelike dubbed video.
For transparency, all AI-translated Reels will feature a ‘Translated with Meta AI’ tag. The audience can opt for viewing the dubbed content or the original one by clicking on the three-dot settings, then ‘Audio and Language,’ and switching off the translation.
Unlike YouTube, which has also introduced AI dubbing, the method adopted by Meta offers greater autonomy for both creators and viewers.
YouTube allows creators to turn off automatic dubbing for individual videos, but does not provide viewers with an option to disable AI-dubbed content entirely.
Meta AI respects user consent and awareness by providing a prominent toggle and an AI disclosure label, measures designed to maintain authenticity and trust.

Starting with creators who have more than 1,000 followers, the tech giant is slowly making the translation tool accessible to everyone. Public Instagram accounts that have the Meta AI option will also be able to use the same translation feature. The same will apply to Facebook creators as well.
When a Reel is uploaded, the creators will notice a new ‘Translate your voice with Meta AI’ option. Upon choosing it, they have the option to select a target language, turn lip-sync on or off, and preview the dubbed version before going live.
Once the dubbed video is approved, it goes live, displaying an AI sticker. With this release, Meta desires to make its platforms more inclusive and bridge language gaps in the creator economy, one Reel at a time.
