WhatsApp will get a major update this November. Millions of people across the globe use the messaging app to send messages, make calls, and share photos. However, Meta recently announced it will change its policies for iOS devices, which will affect a significant number of people worldwide if it doesn’t act faster.

The company is updating the minimum iOS version needed to run WhatsApp. As a result, a few older iPhone models may soon lose support for the app. Users who still rely on these devices may need to update their software or move to a newer phone.

The decision is not unusual. Tech companies often stop supporting older devices when they can no longer handle new features and security updates.

Which iPhones Could Lose WhatsApp Access?

Meta has announced that WhatsApp’s minimum software requirement will change as of November 30, 2026. Starting from that day, the messaging app will only support devices running iOS 15.5 or newer. Thus, the current iOS 15.1 support will not apply.

This makes an update necessary for older iOS users. The affected models will include iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, the first-generation iPhone SE, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus. However, the good news is that all these phones can be updated up to iOS 15.8.8. So, users of these models don’t need to rush to a newer model; instead, they can simply ensure they install the software update before the deadline.

For models that can’t be updated to the required software versions, users have to switch to a newer iPhone. After the app withdraws support, users can still use the messaging platform on their devices. However, future updates, bug fixes, and security improvements will not be available. Over time, this can lead to problems with performance and reliability.

The Security Reason Behind the Change

Many people see this as a device issue, but security is the bigger reason. Older versions of iOS no longer receive regular protection from Apple. This means any newly discovered weakness may remain unfixed. That’s what makes older devices easier targets for hackers and online scams.

WhatsApp also keeps adding new privacy and security features. Those tools often need newer software to work properly. Supporting very old phones can make development harder and may put users at greater risk.

Could Other Apps Follow the Same Route?

It’s not just about WhatsApp. Apps such as Instagram, Facebook, banking apps, and payment services also depend on strong security systems. As online threats continue to grow, more companies may stop supporting older devices.

For users, the message is simple. A phone may still turn on and work, but without software support, important apps can slowly disappear. WhatsApp's latest move shows how important software updates have become in today's smartphone world.
