Meta has reportedly developed a humanoid robot prototype designed to assist with household chores, marking another step in the company's push into robotics and artificial intelligence. The prototype, internally codenamed Max, was built in collaboration with Chinese robotics company Fourier in approximately three months, according to a report by The Information, cited by Engadget on November 1.

The development comes as Meta explores bringing humanoid robots into people's homes. However, the company has not announced a launch timeline for a commercial version.

Meta's Max Robot: Design, Features And Hardware

According to The Information's sources, Max weighs about 106 lbs and stands about 1.5 meters tall, or roughly five feet. The prototype features a display that can show facial expressions, a built-in speaker, and hands designed to pick up small objects.

According to the report, the robot is powered by NVIDIA's Jetson Thor chips. Its design and hardware indicate Meta's efforts to develop a humanoid machine that can eventually assist with everyday household activities.

While the prototype represents progress in the company's robotics ambitions, Meta has not disclosed details about the specific household tasks it can currently perform.

Meta is Already Working On Max 2

Meta is reportedly not stopping with its prototype. The company has been developing a second version, internally codenamed Max 2, since September.

According to the report, the updated prototype will feature changes to the robot's torso and hands. Meta is also adding a projector and additional sensors to help the machine navigate stairs more effectively.

However, the company has not set a launch date for a mass-market version of Max. It also remains unclear when consumers could access the technology.

Meta's Growing Interest in Humanoid Robotics

Meta's interest in humanoid robots dates back to last year, when Bloomberg reported that the company had established a team focused on developing robot hardware. The broader objective was to eventually create machines capable of handling household chores.

Earlier this year, Meta also acquired a startup specializing in artificial intelligence developed specifically for robots.

The latest prototype suggests that the company is continuing to explore how its AI capabilities can extend beyond software and into physical machines. For now, however, Max and Max 2 remain prototypes, with no confirmed plans for commercial release.
