LinkedIn Open to Work has received an update that allows job seekers to disclose salary expectations and notice periods privately to recruiters. The initiative is expected to streamline communication between candidates and recruiters.
The professional networking platform claims that the new additions will bring transparency to the hiring process.
Previously, LinkedIn added an Open to Work badge for aspirants, allowing recruiters to recognise those who are interested in new roles. Adding to that feature, LinkedIn brought new improvements to share notice period and the annual salary expectations for a new role, expediting the entire hiring process. Recruiters can filter out candidates before even starting a discussion with this feature.
According to the platform, “all LinkedIn users will get to use these new options.” However, “it is entirely optional for users to mention notice period and salary, and they can decide not to display such information as per their choice,” revealed the Microsoft-owned professional network.
As the go-to platform for professional connections, LinkedIn provides an Open to Work feature. This aspect was touted to be a success by the company, claiming that “85 percent of users who opt for the feature received help or encouragement from their connections”.
However, the process to get an offer may be tiresome. Candidates often receive multiple offers without matching their expectations.
The addition of notice period and annual salary expectations can filter out unwanted offers, making it smoother to get a new job. The new features are rolling out to all LinkedIn users in India. According to LinkedIn, the platform will hide the Open to Work status from your current employer, though it claims that “it can’t guarantee complete privacy.”
Apart from new additions, LinkedIn is also focusing more on Artificial Intelligence. The company has stated that the data shared on the platform may be used for training AI by LinkedIn or any Microsoft subsidiary.
The Open to Work badge is available by navigating the LinkedIn profile, clicking on Open to and selecting the Find a new job option. In the same tab, users can enter preferred job titles, notice period, and salary expectations. LinkedIn said that these details are only visible to recruiters, even if the badge is public.
Meanwhile, the badge for Open to Work can also be personalized. Candidates can make it visible to recruiters only or to the public and all their connections.
Ruchee Anand, Head of Talent and Learning Solutions, LinkedIn India, explained: “Much like traffic lights, the signals professionals send red, yellow, or green can make all the difference in moving their careers forward.”
A red signal asks recruiters to review the profile again when something doesn’t add up. “Adding a short explanation to your profile about layoffs, career transitions, or breaks helps tell your story authentically,” she added.
The recruiters get a yellow signal when there is a need to proceed with clarity about notice period, timelines, salary expectations, and skills. Anand added: “Globally, 42% of recruiters search for candidates using the skills filter on LinkedIn every week. And yet, some eligible profiles slip through the cracks simply because the skills section was left blank. LinkedIn profiles are up to 5.6x more likely to be viewed by recruiters if you list five or more skills.”
Candidates who have defined roles, updated profiles with key details, and a badge for Open to Work are more likely to get callbacks from recruiters. Recruiters receive a green signal from these job seekers to start the conversation with confidence.
With privacy maintained for salary expectations and notice, both the job applications and hiring process are expected to become faster and more transparent.
