Apple introduced a major camera upgrade with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both models feature a new 48MP Fusion Main camera with a mechanical variable aperture. This allows you to control how much light reaches the camera sensor and how much of a scene stays in focus.
Apple offers four settings, ranging from f/1.48 to f/4. Users can let the camera select the setting automatically or adjust it manually for greater creative control. The narrower settings can help keep more elements in focus.
The wider f/1.48 aperture allows more light to reach the sensor. This is best suited for photography in dim environments, indoor scenes, and nighttime conditions. It can also create a shallower depth of field, helping subjects stand out from the background.
Users can control shutter speed, white balance, and focus along with aperture settings. These are mostly managed by third-party apps available to iPhone users. This suits best for a traditional approach to photography.
Looking ahead, Apple is promoting the camera update as a method of creative videography as well. This new feature and its software component give users more freedom to work in varying lighting conditions.
