Apple quietly changed the wording around one of the key camera features introduced with iOS 27, limiting the new Texture and Grain controls to newer iPhone models. The company’s latest support documentation now specifies that the feature is available on iPhone 18 Pro models.
The change affects Apple’s upgraded Photographic Styles, which give users more control over the appearance of photos. The iPhone 18 Pro models also feature an A20 Pro chip and a new computational photography pipeline.
When Apple first announced the iPhone 18 Pro, its Newsroom documentation said the new Texture and Grain controls would arrive with iOS 27 on iPhone models supporting the latest generation of Photographic Styles. That wording indicated that the feature could extend beyond the latest Pro models.
However, Apple’s current iPhone support documentation now states that texture adjustments are available on iPhone 18 Pro models. Users can select options such as Soft Skin, Glow and Film, while a Grain control can add a film-like effect to a selected texture.
Reports this week noted that older models, including the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 series, were previously understood to support the feature based on Apple’s earlier wording. The updated information narrows that availability.
Texture and Grain are part of Apple’s updated Photographic Styles system. The Texture setting lets users alter the visual treatment of a photograph, while Grain adds a film-style effect.
Apple says, “The controls can adjust the appearance of images and provide greater creative flexibility. Users can change the intensity of available textures and add grain to create different photographic looks.”
The iPhone 18 Pro also introduces a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. Apple says the camera can automatically adjust aperture for lighting and depth-of-field requirements, while users can manually control aperture through the Camera app.
