Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro has delivered a major improvement in charging speed. However, one controlled test found significantly shorter video playback than the iPhone 17 Pro. GIGAZINE, a Japanese technology publication, tested the iPhone 18 Pro twice at maximum brightness. The phone lasted 9 hours and 58 minutes in the first test and 9 hours and 53 minutes in the second.

iPhone 17 Pro reached 15 hours and 41 minutes under the same testing method. The test used maximum screen brightness, 50% volume, Wi-Fi connectivity and a room temperature of 26 degrees Celsius. The battery usage screen showed no unusual background activity. YouTube was the only recorded application.

Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 34 hours of video playback. Its testing uses an offline HDR movie with auto-brightness disabled, making the conditions different from GIGAZINE’s test. Other tests have produced stronger results for the newer model. GSMArena recorded a higher Active Use Score, while Tom’s Guide also reported longer runtime than the previous generation.

Faster Charging Changes the Battery Trade-Off

iPhone 18 Pro shows a clear advantage when it comes to charging. Apple says the phone can reach around 50% in about 15 minutes with a 60W or higher adapter. A test using a 70W Anker Nano Charger reached 35% in 10 minutes and 80% in 30 minutes. A full charge took 60 minutes. Another field test using a 65W PD charger reached 53% after 15 minutes and more than 80% after 30 minutes.

Wireless charging also received an upgrade. With a 15W Anker MagGo charger, the phone reached 13% in 10 minutes and 40% in 30 minutes. A full charge took 90 minutes. The faster charging is linked to the phone’s thermal management system. Apple added a vapor chamber to help spread heat during demanding workloads and charging.

The phone starts at USD 1,199 for 256GB in the US. The conflicting battery results suggest that users should consider both charging speed and endurance when evaluating the upgrade.
