The AI boom is creating jobs in places many people did not expect. Google, Meta, and several other tech companies are spending billions of dollars on new AI data centers. A recent report has revealed that these tech giants have been investing millions of dollars to train the electricians and skilled workers needed to build their data centers

Recently, OpenAI has been investing in a Detroit data center, which is one of the biggest private investments of the time. Reportedly, Detroit Electrical Industry Training Center currently has around 850 apprentices under training.

Similarly, Google is also working with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) to prepare more electricians for future data center construction. The partnership aims to double the union's annual apprenticeship intake from 19,500 to 30,000 over the next three years. Google has invested nearly $50 million in the partnership.

Microsoft has been doing this for a long time. In 2018, the company launched its own data center technician training program. In the last few years, it has expanded to 39 locations worldwide and trained approximately 15,000 people.

The growing investment shows that the AI industry needs much more than software engineers. It also depends on people who can build and maintain the systems behind the technology.

Why Tech Companies are Building Like Infrastructure Firms

Training AI requires a huge amount of computing power, so companies have to build massive data centers with reliable power, cooling systems, and high-speed internet connections. That’s why Google, Meta, and others are investing in land, buildings, and power infrastructure.

In many ways, they are beginning to look like real estate and infrastructure companies. Their success depends not just on better AI models, but also on how fast they can build the facilities needed to support them. With the rise of AI competition, having good infrastructure is as important as having smart software.
