Google will lay the foundation for its $15 billion AI data center campus in Visakhapatnam on April 28. According to reports, N. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, will lead the ceremony. The project is one of the largest foreign investments in India’s digital infrastructure. This initiative comes as a long-term bet on the country’s AI and cloud market.

Google Bets Big on AI with Vizag AI hub

The Vizag project will create a large data center network. The project will include multiple data centers across different locations. The initial projections indicate that capacity will reach between 1 gigawatt and 5 gigawatts in subsequent phases.

For Google, the move expands its global data infrastructure footprint while tapping India’s growing developer base. Here are the key highlights of the project:

  • The project will generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

  • AI engineering, cybersecurity, and data operations roles will see a rising demand.

  • It will drive upgrades in power supply, fiber networks, and subsea connectivity, benefiting the digital economy in India.

  • Local businesses, logistics providers, and real estate markets are likely to see major gains.

Moreover, the campus will cover multiple hundred acres throughout the Vizag region. The system will combine modern cooling technologies with high-capacity server systems and interconnected network infrastructure.

AI Project Timeline and Outlook

The facility will operate at a scale, ranking as the largest data center operation in Asia. It will enable AI workloads, cloud computing, and large-scale data processing.

Construction begins with the foundation ceremony on April 28. The project may roll out in phases, with initial operations expected by the latter part of this decade. The data center will likely attract startups, chip designers, and global tech firms. The Vizag data center underlines a larger trend. It also strengthens India’s position in the AI supply chain.
