Mozilla has announced a major update to Firefox, introducing an AI Window. It’s a new browsing mode designed to integrate artificial intelligence directly into the user’s workflow. The AI Window will work alongside the existing Classic and Private windows, giving users the option of an AI-assisted browsing experience when they want it.
The company believes that users will be able to interact with an AI assistant, generate summaries, and receive contextual help directly within the browser. The company has opened up a waitlist as the feature is still under development.
With AI tools now tightly embedded across major platforms and browsers, the organization says the web needs to evolve to keep pace. The tech giant insists that the Mozilla update remains centred on openness, privacy, and user choice, a contrast to competitors that more aggressively integrate AI.
Mozilla has repeatedly argued that AI “should be built like the internet, open, accessible and driven by choice,” framing the AI Window as an extension of its long-held ethos.
Even with the opt-in model, this move has generated debate in the privacy-conscious Firefox user base. Some community members worry this will lead to feature bloat and resource use, putting more and more cloud-based AI in a browser that’s supposed to err on the side of minimalism and security.
Mozilla isn’t disclosing at this time which AI models will power the feature, how data will be processed, or what limits there might be on information sharing, the major details that early users are watching closely.

Mozilla’s AI push comes at a time when rivals such as Chrome and Edge are accelerating their own integrations of the technology.
